It's an unpleasant day at best here. Low 30's, with freezing rain coming down. Ground is covered with a quarter to half inch of water & ice. The commute to work in the morning is really going to be a problem.

I been out & about today, Jeff. Unless they get some sand or salt out. You better stay home. By the way 4wd doesn't make you stop any easier.

I have to think that the roads right now are more like a frictionless plane than anything. I hope I have no reason to go out, unfortunately, I'm on call, and there's always a chance that I'll have to make a run to the office. I could, but I don't want to. I'm already planning on throwing some salt on the slab tonight before I go to bed as well as in the morning before I leave. Fortunately, Deb doesn't have to go anywhere tomorrow.

I drove 3 hours through it Jeff. My truck has about 1/2in of ice encasing it. I'd love for them to call a snow-day tomorrow, but being 'inner city' it won't happen...
 
Try flying in this crap. I was suppose to leave milwaukee at 4pm (left 2 hours late) now I am stuck in chicago trying to get to winnipeg, canada. Eh
 
50 degrees out and feels like spring...this is just not right. We finally got about an inch of rain over the weekend, but we are still about 17" short to be at adequate subsurface moisture. I am worried about another drought year on the grass and crops.

I hope that's not the case. Its supposed to be 55 here today with rain the 65 tomorrow with rain......then 22 on friday.....:doh:
 
I will take all the rain and snow they can dish out...Ice, that is a different subject. If we loose power, we have to fire up the generators at the hog barns and then all our pressurized water for the cattle is down as well.....luckily we have a tractor PTO driven generator that can power half a small town :D
 
The drive in this morning at 0530 and 32 degrees was better than I thought, the main roads were decent shape, the side roads were slick. The fog was more of a problem than anything this morning. Prediction is down as low as -15 yet this week.

Tyler, this area is also very short of snow this year (again.) There are a lot of irrigation systems in the area, and while they're expensive to run, they're still cheaper than losing a crop. As long as you've got a good aquifer to draw from, at least.
 
If it's not one thing with the jeeps it's another.
Hit a massive pot hole with my DD and now I have to replace a shock, axleshaft u-joint, and control arm bushings. :smsoap:

Jeff, we have an illuvial (maybe alluvial, cant really remember) stream under one of the farms and we have been considering putting up a center pivot irrigation on that place. in one drought year it coupld potentially pay itself off if it ment having 10 bushel corn or 180 bushel corn at $8/bu. We are going to have some test wells drilled this spring to see what kind of gallonage it produces. I hate talking numbers, but 300 acres of corn on that field could potentially gross $408,000 more in one drought year under irrigation...and I can put up a full sweep irrigation unit for less than half that.......now to convince the banker :D

I don't even know what corn is trading at, I haven't listened to a crop report in years.
 
was trading @ $8/bu, but has slowly stepped back into the mid $7's for now, weather and commodity reports will jack with that in the coming months.....I am planning on putting in nearly all soybeans this year just due to the projected lack of moisture and everyone and their brother are putting in corn this year in these parts, so I would rather error on the side of caution b/c if this is a good corn year, supply and demand will knock those $8 prices into the sub $5 price range real quick...and the markets dont care about your increased production cost to get that crop. Beans are way more economical to raise and the profit margin is still very good if you have a good year. I am not looking to get rich, just make a living.

Nothing is wrong with trying to get rich. I do think Tyler is on the right track to plant beans when everybody else is planting corn.
