Overall, I'm just really happy with this truck, and it feels good to be back driving a Ford again (first vehicle was a 93 Ranger RWD w/4.0L). I'll be going to Eau Claire this weekend to work on the pile at Max-Bilt and think I'm going to drive the truck.

Next step is finding either a single spot trailer, or building one...
 
Internet has been down on/off the last 2 days in the district. Somehow our servers are being overwhelmed by high bandwidth requests through our districts firewall, and basically crashing the servers. Luckily our grading system is on a network within the district so we can still post grades for mid-term which are due today. Everything else is dead.

Something doesn't sound right with your description. Production servers should never, ever, ever be available directly through a firewall, except as part of a DMZ network.
 
Sorry, I did not arrucatly describe the issue as it has been 'evolving' since yesterday. The most current description is this:

As of this email, Internet access outside of the district is currently down. We are experiencing abnormally high requests for data bandwidth that is exceeding the capacity of our current firewall (a new one was on order prior to these events and is slated to be replaced as soon as it is received). However, this is only one contributing issue and a new firewall, while able to process greater quantities of data faster, will not address the exponential bandwidth demands we have seen in the last few days.

Isolating the cause(s) of the huge bandwidth requests and responding with the appropriate courses of action are still being determined and our team is working diligently to resolve. Please help in this regard by quitting/exiting out of web browsers (in the event of malicious code imbedded in web sites) and please no audio (Internet radio) or video streaming. This will help us more quickly identify and address issues.

school networks are, in general, some of the most poorly setup and managed networks I've ever come across.

They rely on the proxy server to filter everything, but there's virtually nothing in the way of a proper firewall on the connections. Usually they connect to some "consortium" of public schools that all share a big WAN. So you've got a firewall there, but at none of the client sights. SO if you're trying to track down huge network traffic it's going to be hard.

In some respects, I guess that I'm a little spoiled. Tracking down bandwidth hogs has never been a major problem, and I've got open source or inexpensive tools to track them down.
 
Any chance you get your internet connection via UW Madison? If so, I probably know one of the techs who can give you a more solid explanation. That email still doesn't quite make sense.

He's at a high school in the St. Paul, MN area, I doubt they're getting connectivity through UWMadison.

His explanation does make sense, when you consider how cash-strapped public schools get. Slim resources and very little capital to do the right thing leads to partial measures. In this case, the schools are depending on a single level protection scheme, as well as pooling marginal bandwidth.

^^^ This combined with the fact that Our newest building is 2 yrs old and is state of the art in the realm of technology, yet we have 2 buildings that are running on T1 connections...

Maybe, maybe not. It's also possible that somebody is downloading directly to servers.... or those servers have been pwned. Shoot, I've heard of an oscilloscope that got pwned and was running as a porn server at a national high energy lab. Only reason it was caught was because the experiment on that network segment was down, and this thing was spewing packets.
 
Of course when I have time off to spend at home and hang out the Reds made the post season and I could watch every game. In fact the baby came convient to watch a couple of games.

That said they have given up a 2-0 series lead and are now getting beat in game five.

I have a great job. Except when everybody in management has their heads up their asses or are under the desk of the next higher supervisor.

Yes or no. Sure, I would be disappointed with a 'no' last week, but now I'm f'n pissed.
