Important

My 92 Grand Prix had 213K. And still got 29mpg on the regular.

Mini Vans are the opposite of good or cool. Never grasped the concept. Buy a suv. Or a full size van.

Have some kids.

Then take a look around. Find any SUV's with all the family bells and whistles of a minivan? Nope. How about 25 mpg on the highway? Nope. How about the ability to take the family AND whoever is visiting you all in the same car to dinner? Maybe, but you either have to put the adults in the third row where their knees are in their chests or you have to put the kids back there and you can't get to them when they're doing something they're not supposed to.

Then go price that SUV that does all the things that the minivan does. I can buy a new town and country for $30k. I can't touch a new expedition or suburban with the same options for less than $45k.

I hate minivans. I always swore that I'd never own one. But you grow up, you have a family and you start to realize that if you buy the right tool for the job, you spend a lot less time and frustration doing the job.

But you want to know the best part?

I don't give a shit what kind of car you drive and you shouldn't give a shit what kind of car I want to drive. That makes both of us happy ;)

In all seriousness, I think the mid-sized RWD/AWD vans are pretty good. It's basically an SUV with a sliding rear door.

I agree with Josh though. It does have a lot to do with shifting priorities and mentality.

Astros are perfect for 16yr old boys...

:D

I think a lot of my hate for my windstar is because of the jeep I lost to get it. Other than the 3k that was dropped in it the first 6 months it's been a solid van. I get to put a battery in it tonight. I keep getting the cheap 2 year batteries since I didn't plan on having it as long as we've had it. I know I wont have it two years longer. Ford D plan now is in my future.

I can see your point and am planning on 2 more. Can't say I won't own one. Maybe your that much older, smarter and more attractive than me! ;)

Minivans are great for group trips, for my mom, she has a babysitting job and sometimes needs all the seats. I might use it from time to time when there is a big group trip (like next weekend when 10 plus people are heading to Holiday World). I just want a good van that won't have many major issues. I can say she probably would have cooked the transmission had I not found the leak after the test drive. I probably won't own one for a while, but when Sarah went on vacation with four friends, they rented one because of all their luggage.

Personally, I wouldn't mind a big 12 passenger van. More people, but take all the seats out and got room for a mattress for camping and keeps warm.

Don't worry, hoping in a month of so, Jeep talk will start when I can start replacing worn parts.

Those AWD Astros were boss. As long as they didn't have those gaudy fiberglass running boards. I don't like the look and hate trying to put one on a lift. And yeah, those 4.3s are pretty good little engines. They made 190hp, got decent mileage (for what they were) and were tough. GM shouldn't have quit making them.

our astro was a base model...it didn't even have a tape deck, so no running boards for us. which is good, cause i probably could have ripped them off on a few occasions. that ole van got me through a lot...first trips in the snow, moving to college and back a few years. lots of duck hunting trips with pops and my brothers. wish they still made the astros...i would buy one when we have kids
