Important

SO my buddy has been having a hell of a time with his Jeeps lately. First his Fiance's t-case scattered. In the process of getting a new case for it, his XJ has started to act up. It started off my stumbling a little at highway speed, then it started dying driving down the road. Now it won't idle unless his foot is in it. Does this sound like a TPS to anyone else? I think he about has the t-case done but needs his rig so they don't have to share one. Any Ideas?

Flex, not knowing the year makes it a bit more difficult to diagnose. My 99 did exactly what you described and it was a combination of the CPS and the fuel pump/pressure regulator. I replaced the fuel pump assembly first and ithat fixed the first problem, the CPS was the later fix. Get a fuel pressure gauge and check it on the rail.

My 99 did just that only it was TPS... When my CPS died it didn't run, period.

In fact, my 99 did that twice! (second time my fault for getting TPS wet)

Shit, forgot to say it was a 96! Fuel pump kicks on, it fires but won't stay running. Thats why i ruled out cps but i guess we'll see.

Hook up multi-meter to TPS and open/close the throttle slowly, if you see a strange drop in readings, the TPS has a dead spot.

what is it supposed to read?

Gah, now you're trying to make me remember stuff on my day off... Hang on I got it scribbled on a piece of paper around here somewhere...

it should range in values from somewhat above 0 volts (0.8 seems familiar) to somewhat under 5 volts (4.6?) Basically, you just want a clean sweep without it dropping to zero or spiking to 5 at any points.

So...If I could teach someone something out of my misfortune, it would be don't punch things harder than your fist. I broke my hand while drunk Saturday night/Sunday morning. Its called a Boxer's Fracture. Bout the coolest thing about it is the name...

Here it is *(taken from post on CF)

You should have 5 volts going into the TPS. At idle, TPS output voltage must be greater than 200 millivolts. At wide open throttle (WOT), TPS output voltage must be less than 4.8 volts.. The best is to use an analog meter (not digital) to see if the transition from idle to WOT is smooth with no dead spots. With your meter set for volts, put the black probe on a good ground like your negative battery terminal. With the key on, engine not running, test with the red probe of your meter (install a paper clip into the back of the plug of the TPS) to see which wire has the 5 volts. One of the other wires should show .26V (or so). The other wire will be the ground and should show no voltage. Move the throttle and look for smooth meter response up to the 4.49 at WOT.

If you wanna check fuel, I think 96's had a pressure of around 49psi.... I could be wrong tho...

Josh, one time I hurt my hand..it was called a wankers fracture...and I was not drunk...well, maybe a little.

Tyler, i once sat on my hand for about 15 min till it went numb. they cal that the stranger..

I thought that was a repetitive stress injury called carnal tunnel syndrome :roflmao:

You know they put a knob on the end of those so you don't slip off and hit the wall....:twak:

done that one before... its likely your 4th or 5th metacarpel, isnt it? most people shatter their knuckle before breaking the 2nd or 3rd, and the 4th and 5th are really prone to break from throwing a punch wrong. cool name though, but only if its got a cool story with it. do tell... lol.

also buckled my left radius.
broke my left radius and ulna, my arm was snapped 90 degrees.
cracked my radius, ulna, splintered the ulna in another place, and broke 2 different carpels.
skull
teeth
collar bones, broken and bruised
broken and bruised ribs
broken/bruised sternum
shoulders dislocated
seperated my left shoulder
tore the muscles in my abdomin twice...

im a walking accident.
