how do i do a leak down test?

both the crank and cam sensors are a pita to get unplugged

mac 'have to prove its internal' gyvr

You will need a gauge set for a leakdown test. Usually two gauges. You put the cylinder at tdc. Put 100 pounds of shop air in the cyl. Seal off the gauge set and see if it holds it or leaks it.

sooooooooooooo more than doing a compression check...

Well, yes and no.

The leak down tool can be simplified for your application to a spark plug adapter, a shut off valve, and a hose coupling.

Spark Plug Adapter:
Hollowed out plug with a 1/4NPT to 3/8" hose adapter.

Shut Off Valve: Could be a air nozzle (also eliminate the hose coupling), a air tool speed adjuster...

Hose coupling: Duh ;)

Bring the cylinder under test to TDC with the valves closed.
Add air.
Listen for leak.

If the issue is really an exhaust leak in the cylinder, this will find it.

If you use the actual tool (Like $30), it is more informative than a compression test because it tells you why compression may be low. Aircraft Mechanics use leak down instead of compression readings because it is a more accurate assessment of the engine's top end health.

Gettin fawked up tonight started drinkin labatts at bout noon wrenchin on the heeps. Now the father in law just made some homemade Apple pie. And this shit amazing!!!!
Apple pie is friken awesome. Whats this I see about a trip to R&V? Its been a long time since I wheeled that park.

But if the rings aren't fully seated as the engine builder says...

It was good, never know your drinkin everclear. Plus my grandpa in law got 190 proof from Ohio.

Yea we are goin saturday. I've never been there. The more the merrier.

I picked up a 97 Passat VR6 as a new DD. The design is dated looking, but growing on me. I got it for a steal from a guy I work with because it wouldn't start; so one push button starter switch later and it runs.

The XJ is in the back garage still, waiting on a pile of parts. How do you like that triple electric fan setup Brendan? I think that was you, what brand?

nate, that was same advice you gave me with the Bounder

and think how much farther you'd be ahead if you had brick+roadflared that thing.

Have you pulled the oil cap off while it was running Mac?

I forget if you've identified which cyllnders are not working.
if so, swapped coil packs?

Im' not too hip to the injection on that thing, but I'd think if you pulled the crank sensor it would die. Might try pulling the cam sensor though, the ECU should take a few guesses at the timing util it fires, well, most will.

I'm trying to find a service manual for that thing right now.

87 'call me' manche

edit:
it won't run without the crank position sensor. No signal and the ECU kills fuel within 3 seconds it says.
Makes no mention of the Cam Position failure mode. I don't know if it will run with no cam sync signal. If its like the XJ ignition system it will, just takes a long while to fire.
