finally got a chance to play with the little 90 amp harbor freight welder i picked up for 20 bucks a couple months back. after so many years of not welding i pretty much lost the feel for it, couldn't get a good bead going and kept burning through the metal (it was thin square tube bought from menards though)i did however successfully tack weld wich is good enough for tonight. i will have to pick up some thicker scrap to keep practicing on.

If its got the HF wire in it.. you are going to have a tougher time working with it. That wire is awful.

for sure.

go get some decent wire for it and it will be night and day.

and buy a crap ton of tips, mine seems to like eating them, mostly because the wire feed is kind of inconsistent and when the feed stops randomly I burn the wire to the tip and ruin it. oh, the wire feed. It's a fine line between tension knob too tight and not tight enough. And get one of those felt wire cleany things to go on before the wire feed rollers, it helps a lot.
