I had a customer tow in his car last night. Front left tire is flat, flat spot in the rim and half the hubcap is gone. Get it in and checked out today. There is evidence on the tire of a major impact and the flat spot on the wheel. I call him to tell him what he needs to fix it and he tries to tell me the tire just went flat at 80mph and he didn't hit anything.... Do people think that people that work in the auto service industry are stupid?

Several years ago, while I was getting a new set of tires, a ZJ was hauled in on a flatbed, with the 2 rear tires flat, and both fronts very low. Nice day, I was standing outside, while it was gently driven into the service bay. The service tech jacks up the rear, and takes off the right rear tire.I had a customer tow in his car last night. Yes. Heard and saw a lot of dumb stuff when I worked at the shop. Double that with stuff I pick up with the wrecker.
"It just stopped running." - boiled all the coolant out and overheated the engine to the point of failure.
"It just started making a noise." - went so long between oil changes it was all gone.
"It just started pulling to the right." - fresh yellow paint on the rim and flat tire.
"The brakes just started squealing." - pads gone, rotor worn through.

"Good luck fixing that tire!" I'd overheard the conversation between the owner and the desk agent about patching the flats and reinflating the fronts.
The tech replied "I gotta try."
The tire had a 2 legged gash in the side. Each leg was at least 2", if not 3", and at 90 degrees to each. *AND*...... about a 6" section of the safety bead was completely missing from the rim. Not just bent, but completely missing. About this time, the owner walked up to the tech. "WHAT DID YOU HIT????"
"Nuthin......."
"Sir, I can't fix this tire. This rim is also completely ruined, and is unserviceable." The owner started to argue with the tech about just patching the tire. About then, my truck was done, and I left, I did not hear the end of that.
Getting my Auto degree and then working in the field has given me almost daily examples human idiocy. I usually like to give people the benefit of a doubt when they first approach me with automotive related questions.... However, I have lately given those around me the impression that the 'common man' is stupid and that I want nothing to do with him.
I get a lot less automotive questions now...
Classic "I came in for an oil change last week and now my daughters pregnant" kinda stuff all friggen day.

It's awesome. I don't think it can be beat for the $$$ spent. Super directional though. Maybe an 8* beam width? I can't remember. My VHF antenna is a tad undersized so sometimes I lose the VHF, but the UHF signal strength pegs 100% all the time, even during rain/snow. I'm in a 2 edge area according to the TVfool maps. I've heard great things about the bow ties, but I think I'm going to stick with the boom.Munchie, Do you like the 91XG?
friend called me last night to come look at his car. a knocking noise. I asked him if he had checked the oil. Said he just put 3 quarts in it, right after the noise started......."It just started making a noise." - went so long between oil changes it was all gone.
