Well, I am lighting a fire under the insurance guys ass in about 10 minutes. Wish Me luck guys. I have a new Jeep to buy just need the cash! One question though. How do I go about getting it from KY to here without a plate on it( some idiot forgot to grab his :D)? Is the bill of sale sufficient?

The local DMV "should" provide you with a 30 day tag for whatever fee they charge if you go there and show them the title/bill of sale. That and your insurance would make you legal.

Edit: Some states call this a "moving permit" according to google. Your best bet is to get the number for the local DMV and call to make sure before you go down there.

x2

Or you could just print Off a ten by 6 peice of paper with some blocky numbers and letters on it... No one would know the difference right? :gee:

I've met some serious toolbags cops and I've never met one who would write a ticket for someone driving a car home from buying it.
Obviously, you need to have the bill of sale and signed title for proof.

Well, Scratch that. May not be getting it now! I have never been so Insulted in my Life! They tried to offer me what my parts that are installed are worth so I am telling them no and I am gonna take it to court if I have to. They also said my seats need replaced and my paint was bad. Duh, Its a Cherokee. The only seat that had a problem was the drivers seat. You know the Rip on the left side that EVERY cherokee has!

Big surprise here, but I buy a lot of cars. Just have the signed title with the current date on it, and a bill of sale. In a pinch, just write the year/make/model/VIN/price on a sheet of paper and have both the buyer/seller sign it, that will suffice.

When you go to the BMV you don't even need the bill of sale (I've never had them ask for it), and if "for some reason" the price on the bill of sale and title don't match, that helps you avoid some questions.

Also, if you have a out-of-Indiana title for the vehicle, you will need to go to a police station or otherwise find a police officer who can do a VIN check on the vehicle (to make sure it isn't reported stolen), and he will give you a form indicating that. Some BMV personnel can do the check on the spot, but usually they will make you go to the police station.

$2445! Like 100 more than the fair market value. The adjuster didn't even write down that I had all those parts on it!

Do you have an agreed upon value or an aftermarket parts value on your insurance policy?

If you don't (i.e. you and the insurance company agree that your jeep is worth XXX dollars and you pay a higher premium) then there's nothing you can do. You're going to get what the vehicle is worth to replace it with the same vehicle. What you bolted on or modified doesn't count in the insurance world unless you have a policy that specifies those parts.

My motorcycle policy has an additional $5k for aftermarket parts. If I ball it up, I show them the receipts for everything I've installed and I get vehicle plus parts value.

Buddy had a boat that was torn up in a hurricane. He had a policy with an agreed (sight unseen or appraised) value of $5k. The boat was worth about 1500 bucks, but the insurance company wrote the check for 5,000. He paid more than if he would have had it valued at what it was worth.

I hate to piss in your Wheaties but...
Ask anyone who's ever tried to sell a modified Jeep.

Your Jeep is worth market value MINUS whatever modifications have been done
The sad truth.

If they're offering book, grab it and run.
If the parts are worth it, buy it back.

I beg to differ. It's a bit different if you're the injured party, i.e. not at fault.

I got hit in a parking lot several years ago (on our way to my g/f's Dad's funeral, but that's a different story.) I went through subrogation, brought in a list of what I saw as damaged and what the current price quotes were, and the adjuster cut me a check on the spot, significantly more than what stock replacements would have been.

Aaron, just drive it back without a plate, or grab the plate from your XJ (you DID take the plate off, right?) I drove back to Indy from Boston in an ebay purchased XJ without a plate and didn't get stopped. Have the title and your insurance card handy and you will be fine.

As for the VIN, the BMV has always checked for me on out of state vehicles.

Edit: When were you going to get it? Where in KY?

No, I totally forgot about the plate until after the place closed then they took it to Indy afterwards to their Yard. I am buying it back though since either way I look at it I am going to have to borrow money to get another Jeep. I have been screwed over for so many different things I am kinda used to it. I cant find a stock 97 XJ for that price. I have worked way to hard the past few years to get what I wanted, then in a few seconds a DRUNK lady ruined my Jeep. I think I deserve to be "Made Whole" after that!

The Jeep I am looking at is in Georgetown, KY but I am not going to buy anything until I look it over really good.

Found a 95 country here in town with a 3 inch lift that has the stress crack behind the steering box. I may get it if I can look at it and see if its is weldable. May have to call in a favor from someone If I do get it! Its really cheap so I could buy it Friday while this whole insurance thing is going on. It also needs a front bumper and Tires Which I have! :D
