I got to drive all over the southwest burbs this morning, looking at two jobs and delivering a shelf I built.
It sure seemed like the little time we had since the last snow was enough that everybody forgot how to drive in it.
Also got a call from Hawaii State Parks about our camping reservation. The beach we wanted to camp at is closed until June :tears:

Wish I could make WF, but the camping was just to add a few days to our three timeshare weeks. I already booked a cheap hotel for the first night, as that would have been a hassle for camping anyway.
I'll be looking at some of the county parks, but they tend to be full of loud partiers. Hey, then we'll feel like we're camping at WF!

One last recovery on the way home this evening. Some lady decide that it was a good idea to turn around in an un-bladed empty parking lot.
I need a sticker: "Mercury Topaz, Ford Windstar, Silverado 2500HD & Ford Ranger Recovery Team"
I also found a brand spankin new sled (2 man jobbie) laying in the middle of the road on the way home. It's a nice one too! I'd say it flew out of someones truck. I waited around for at least 20-30 seconds and noone claimed it so......:dunno:

What do you strap to?
I'm often out and about, either in the jeep or the tow rig, and come across some damsel (or dipstick) in distress. But I'm always afraid I'll pull their cheesy plastic bumper off.
How does one safely recover a Topaz?

I got called to pull a fellow co-worker out of the ditch...there was no damage but the city contact tow truck company told him two hours...so i loaded up jr jeep with a couple of straps and a small chain. had to hook to a hole in the bottom of the uniframe rail on the car with a chain, make a small loops and pull him out with the jr jeep...it was fun for sure...

Maybe it was a Contour? There was a tow loop on the rear of it and the van. The trucks I used their rear hitch.

Almost all of the unibody plastic body cars have elongated holes in the unibody frame underneath. You should have at least 2 of those used opposite sides before pulling and do not pull out the ones with aftermarket ground effects. I use a recovery a strap and a tow strap. I use one loop of the recovery strap in my receiver hitch and run the tow strap with the 2 hooks through the other end. I then hook the two hooks into the unibody.

I watched a video of a hook on a strap breaking one time. I'll never use a strap with hooks.

Saw a ramcharger take one through the radiator a few years back at the badlands.
I always offer some advice, but make them hook the strap up to their car. That way they can't say that YOU put the strap on a plastic bumper and pulled it off. Even if they have a solid tow point, I express my concerns and make it clear that I would rather not pull them out.
One night my brother called me asking for advice, he was helping a lady who had somehow high-centered her car on a guardrail. She was cussing at them and throwing a fit. They ended up leaving her there and called the cops.

Pulled my Brothers honda out yesterday. He wasn't stuck too bad, He was reversing down the road and backed into a yard!

Mine sucks. I just changed the wiper blade on it a few weeks ago, and the new blade (cheaper Bosch, maybe Anco?) binds on the clip, making a weak wiper worse. Probably need to clean the arm up a bit- the spring and hinges look a bit rusty on mine. It will clear rain, but not spray, snow, slush, or ice.
I've got a tow strap (not a "snatch" strap) with hooks on the ends. Is it advisable to cut the hooks off and use the strap, or toss it and buy a strap without hooks?

New wiper arms are available for a couple of bucks in the HELP section at the local auto parts shop.
Tow straps don't have the spring or stretch in them like a recovery/snatch strap. Buy the right strap. Both have their uses, but the tow strap isn't used for offroad recovery.

I had considered the tie-down slots. I think most cars have 'em, but I'll need something with a hook...

I was thinking more along the lines of having to drag someone out of a snowbank, but I'll keep that in mind.
