you know, i've replaced the rear shocks on 3 different XJ's before (all older, too: 92/93/95) and only broken one upper bolt.......what the hell did they change in the later models? I broke all 4 on my 2000! I wasn't expecting that to happen......

oh well....
I had the same issues with mine. Then to top it all off I broke the tap chasing the drilled out threads.

What were you trying to do? JIM.

Pulled off the tires so I could get em swapped over to different rims. Nothing exciting happened, just kinda unsettling to hear the stands crunching down in the gravel and settling at not-so-straight angles.

i don't think i'm even going to bother drilling them out this time......I think I'm just going to weld on new mounts

Probably the best route... buddy of mine almost broke his wrist when the drill bit stuck and the drill whipped his hand around at the speed of light.

Why does everyone waste their time drilling them out? Get a punch and a hammer and break the old nuts loose from the cross member. There are triangle shaped acess holes towards the center of the crossmember that are there to allow you to get a shoulder nut on a wrench back there, just use a little grease to help keep the nut in the wrench. Took me about ten minutes to do both sides.

The upper mounts on late models are a piece of cake to get to.
Just open the hatch:

They all broke off on my 2000 when I did the first lift.
That was in 2002, and it only has 25,000 miles.
Cheap bolts....

I don't think you needed to cut quite as much as to you to replace them though.

I've done two old, and not taken care of XJ's (88 and 90) and haven't broken one yet. But I PB blaster them for days before hand, then heatwrench them before even attempting them.

Typical Jeep day.

Replaced the bad U-joint on the passenger side, found out the one on the drivers side is bad. Dammit....

Sounds like almost as much fun as I'm having with mine. Developed a case of DW and haven't been able to figure out the cause yet. At least I have all new steering, adjustable LCA and HD adjustable tracbar and bracket. For some reason the new steering made the DW worse.

Finally took the doors off for the drive to work today...

Wanted to retain power locks and rear window control so I extended the wiring harness and relocated the switches into the console.
