More like.....

a flat steel bed that screams classic Willys.

:D

Rev
I'd love to, but it still needs to retain the ability to haul stuff and keep it dry, as it's the camping rig.
I think I'm gonna do some research on the power wagons and the 50-60's kaisers, and copy a military style bed, just flat sheetmetal, trailer fenders over the wheels that I can take off when wheeling.

I was, that or M37.

I think the 715 style bed would be easier to construct. I'd just make holes so I could drop the reovable top into those rectangular supports

How about J-truck thriftside????
I think that's outside my abilities to construct. This will be my first major metalworking project.
I'd like to use a tube for the upper bed rails, and make it single wall sheetmetal for the sides. Anything else I think is beyond my meager abilities.

That's why I was leaning towards the power wagon style bed.
tube, and the supposrts could easily be cut to allow for stake pockets, and it's just one bend in the sheetmetal at the top.

Turns out those ball joints I ripped apart at winterfest are under warranty...... now I have trail spares.

Its a factory trac loc (limited slip), sell it on the bay, I have seen them go for $60-200.

Well, its not a trac loc. Mark and I are stumped. The body of the carrier is solid with no holes in the side like the trac lock and power lock have. It has three bolts running the length of the carrier perpendicular to the ring gear, ruling out a clutch type limited slip. It appears to be some sort of torsen differential, you can see the gears inside through the end. Mark thinks it is an early trac-lock, a zexel, or gleason unit.

Any ideas?

Really??? It wouldn't be that much more complicated.

I suppose not, I don't think I could make the wheel well opening proper, hence the trailer fender option. That and I'd like the fenders removable, so my long ass doesn't destroy them on the trail like the current bed.

I like the M37.

Gives you more room for stuff because it's wider to the edge of the cab and easy to build with the flat sheetmetal and square tube construction.

I think the 715 bed would look too long and narrow and not provide as much room on the inside of the bed. The M37 bed taken out to the corners is going to need some sort of inner fender though.

Have you looked at summit's mini tubs for hot rods/muscle cars? Those things are already formed and bead rolled for strength and you could cut them up to suit your design.

I like the 37 as well, I think I'm going to try and make it not look bad.

I hadn't thought of the mini tubs, I'm sure they got some for an s-10 that's probably about the right size.

Heard you're going to the desert.

Fun, fun. 110 degrees everyday in the shade.

Could be worse, could be Iraq instead of Arizona.

At least we're going in style, I'll be in my hotel suite and at the pool every night.
