Important

Still an XJ dash, good enough for me! Looks killer, man...

Can you tell the difference in unibearings by sight?

I always meant to take critical measurements, but never have.

I guess you could just look for HO badges on the donor, and that'd get you close...

Robert
I know nothing of the RENIX era vs HO era unit bearing differences, but you can tell 99.5-down vs 99.5-up ones apart by sight. Measure the height of the centering hub (between the axle shaft nut and the lug studs) against one of your fingernails before you head for the yard, then check the ones you are about to pull. The hub flange height is different by about a quarter inch, I forget which is taller though.

The fun part is that some slightly-less-than-intelligent repairman could have replaced only one side, and the associated brake hardware, at some point in the past, I've seen composite style hubs and brake hardware on one side of an axle and cast style hubs and brake hardware on the other side before.

I just can't win.

Driver's side balljoints have been showing signs of failure on the Dodge for a while, and I've finally scared up the time to tear it apart. Only took a 2' breaker bar with a HiLift handle on it to break the nuts free from the studs. Got the knuckle off, only to find out that I don't have a press big enough to remove or install D60 balljoints. Guess I gotta go running around tomorrow to find someone who can.

as long as you get the brake rotor that goes with the hub it doesn't matter what the caliper is.

My front D30 is franken axle.

97+ housing, 87 knuckles, 97+ unit bearings, 87 calipers, 97 rotors.

it's amazing any of this shit works.

97-87-97-87-97.

As long as you set up a cool pattern like that, it'll work fine.

Robert

it's the only way I can keep it straight when I go to the parts store.

You should see the looks I get at the parts store.
Then you toss in the 8.8 out back and their heads explode.

Got rubber chunks flying off of the harmonic balancer. It's moved out far enough that the belt has jumped over a rib. Piss poor timing. We're now down to only one vehicle. The truck is the only one on the road! Wyfe's van is at the stealership with A/C issues.

Is the harmonic balancer a PIA to swap? I've never dealt with one.

Easiest way to get at it is from below or from behind the bumper... haven't done one yet, but I realized I was staring right at it when I pulled the bumper on the MJ saturday to install tow hook brackets. You'll want the proper puller tool, autozone sells one that doubles as a steering wheel puller.

If you guys have any other brackets that you suggest that is great too.

I borrowed the puller from autozone, just cause I wasn't gonna buy something I'd use just once.

Pulled it off, pressed it back on. May wanna look at the front oil seal while you're there, but I've never heard of one leaking.

Robert

You'll also want to pick up a handful of appropriately sized washers and a longer bolt of the same thread as the regular harmonic balancer bolt... use to press the new HB on instead of munging up the threads on the regular bolt.

I bought the puller (a whopping $15) because I also end up doing stuff with the steering wheel fairly often... have replaced the steering wheel in two of my jeeps and pulled a few others at the junkyard to get clocksprings for some friends.

Made my way back up to Green Bay over the weekend. Went out to a little fest-type event that Kim was doing some jumping in...I have video! He had his old DD out there ready to beat the hell out of it. And the pork roast was good up there too. I know this got mentioned somewhere in some thread...Whatever. It was a good time.

Wheeling with the Max-Bilt guys over the weekend. Finally got to test my 3in lift for the first time. Really going to be more ballzy in MO with it... Also decided that the axles are getting locked.... After I get the leaf packs and tires....

They let me in, it should be no problem for you!

At the rate things are going though, the MWC will get kicked out of NAXJA for not having enough XJs. :D

I'm still wheeling xjs.

The YJ will be a grocery getter.

mac 'take that' gyvr

I still claim to wheel my XJ even though it is on over 2 months on the jack stands....I wheel the YJ daily checking cattle :D

XJ is going to get some luvin' over the next few weeks b/c I am taking some vacation time off......

problem with those is that they always seem to get ripped off in the tight, tree lined trails.

Yea i already had to dig it off the lift gate cause it bent in on the trail and i couldnt get the gate open
