Important

Bought a 94 grand cherokee today for a new dd. Can't wait to show you some pics of the axleshafts in the front. AWESOME!!!!!

That would be a heavy pig in the back of your truck Mac. At the weight and MPGs you are seeing, I'd try to find the lightest camper you can.
I agree...look for something like this.

Couldn't resist bringing the Easy back.

once you are close to grossing 28k, who's really worried about how much a truck camper weighs...

fuel mileage has to level off somewhere :)

I checked my instant fuel economy option on my truck when hauling the camper home and it was as bad as when I haul the XJ on the trailer...I am like you mac, once the milage gets so shitty, it eventually has to level out somewhere...I get on average 7 mpg when hauling the XJ, I might get as good as 8.5 if I keep it under 65mph. Loaded with the rig, gear and camper I am hoping to stay above 6 mpg.... I am seriously looking into getting a tune..I know it is a gasser, but there is still a LOT of wiggle room for tuning on a gasser even. 4.10 gears are not helping w/ the fuel economy either..the 1500HD of my era is the same truck as the 2500HD but they have 3.73's in them and pull 15-17mpg on the highway unloaded compared to my 11mpg hwy....

on a side note, the camper has vinyl flooring in it and was looking dated, so since I had 5 cases of laminate flooring (fake hardwood look) I am going to put the wood flooring in it just to update the look and make it a bit easier to keep clean. Camille is going to make some new curtains for it too since the prior owner had custom made curtains w/ horses on them...yee-haw!

What the hell is the problem guys. My van gets 10-12mpg towing the xj. Without towing it gets 9-10mpg. Go figure. The 5.4 triton is holding up just fine, but could go for a tune up.

Here is a picture of the axleshaft on the grand cherokee I picked up yesterday. Both sides are like this. They have been driving it like this for the past 5000 miles or so they said.

I think it is b/c mac and I have 8 lug nuts...it is all about the lug nuts....I had a Ford F250 and it got bad milage too, it had the 5.4 in it as well but once again it had 8 lug nuts....

I like to complain about milage, but in reality I dont let it bother me b/c all of my equipment typically hets about 2-3 mpg at the farm..or if under extreme pull (5 shank deep ripper) I can get as low as <1 mpg :D

WOW!! I cant believe they made it 5000 miles like that..everyone knows that the red bungee straps are rated for only 4000 miles...it is the green ones you really want to get :D

Is that Great Stuff I see around the edges? What the hell is stuffed in there? Since it's obviously not spinning when you're driving it.

Get some cheap CV shafts at AutoZone... mine are holding up... so far.

With all this talk of fuel economy... I got 18mpg unloaded this weekend. Bone stock, no exhaust or chip (yet). All the gassers can remind me that I'm paying $.30 more per gallon though.

Also I think macgyvr has more pictures of his various tow rigs than he does of his Jeep.

My dodge with the brand new injection pump and the raptor lift pump + the super chip set on the street performance setting (+60HP, +180 torque) got about 19 on the last tank of fuel

Yes, that is Great Stuff in the axletubes. The only reason I can see was to keep gear lube from coming out, but with the shaft in there, there is no reason. Who knows why they did that.
I already have a set of cv shafts set to go in. I knew I kept them for three years for some reason.:D

I have 10 lug nuts...

I don't have any wheelin pics cause I never get the camera out anymore...the limited time i get to wheel, i wheel...i have plenty of time to take pics of the tow rig.

mac 'you can't take any of it with you anyways, might as well spend it' gyvr

but you can only tow 8 or 9k reliably...and you get stuck on wet grass...

I'm glad to hear this actually. Makes me glad I went the 1/2 ton route.

That's all I'll ever need to tow. As long as I use good judgement, I won't get stuck. I don't need to have a tow rig at the campground.

To each his own...........

yeah, our 1/2 ton Tahoe got a minimum of 10 mpg when towing the XJ and when things were lightly loaded and wind to our back we have got as good as 15mpg with it. I love the pulling power of the lower gears in the 3/4 ton and the added ammenities for travel (heated leather blah blah blah...), but my truck is a daily work truck and I NEED 4 wheel drive. If I were buying a truck as a DD and did not have to use it each day as a work vehicle, I would no doubt have a 2 wheel drive 1/2 ton for function and comfort. Where Mike's trcuk is the same body (crew/SB) as mine, I know that they ride great due to wheel base and I personally love the interior creature comforts of a Chevy. Everytime I go to the pumps..I just shake my head and think..I choose this!! But once I jump back in the drivers seat I am glad I did!!
