Important

Just saw the Black helicopters fly over my apartment complex. The first one had no lights on the second had his running lights on and the third had his spotlight going.

You guys have really got me thinking now. It will be a while before I need to haul two rigs, and having somewhere to sleep that isn't a tent is sounding pretty good. The slide-ins are nice with stove, sink, and sometimes a toilet, but I really don't need any of that, just a place to sleep. A little protection from the elements is nice but I'm not even too worried about heating. Thinking about getting a camper shell and just throwing the air mattress in the bed. Maybe build something to provide a level surface above the fender, then sleep to one side and still have room on the other side for cargo.

That's about what I did:

Thing is, I really don't need it all the time. I wanted something I could put on / pull off by myself. The 'glass caps were about as heavy (and expensive!) as the Capri that Pat posted, 500#, $2000.

Mine is half that weight, and cost about a quarter of that to build. Most of that was getting the softtop stitched up.

Works great for a weekend camping trip, then it comes apart in pieces so I can break it down myself, and store it in the corner of the garage.

Thanks for posting that up, Robert. I have about the same needs, I want something I can use for trips but easily pull off the rest of the time, since it seems like I'm always using the bed for hauling crap around. I looked at the Bestop removable soft tops, and for $600 (well plus the $200 in the rail system) that might be worth the time I'd have to put into putting one together.

My stitching skills aren't that great (nonexistant).

I have slept 8 nights out of the last three weeks in a tent...

I'm tired of tents...

I'm also just tired.

Excellent weather here.

And its finals week, I'd rather be outside but I have classes to pass.

I didn't know BestTop made one. Back when I did mine, there was a company called CanBack that I looked at, but they were close to a grand, too.

Mine, too. I had a local boat and RV place stitch it up.

When I first described what I wanted to do over the phone, the guy said he could do it for "a couple hundred bucks." Once I'd welded up the frame and dropped it off, it was "four or five." When I picked it up, it was five plus tax, almost $550.

But it has held up great. I planned for it to normally live inside, but I actually left it on there from last July, through the winter, and just took it off a couple weeks ago. There's a seam right down the middle that leaks just a tiny bit when it rains really hard, but that's it.

We upgraded our camping setup to a Jayco ourselves last week. A little different than Tyler's, but we can't fit the Duggar family in a truck camper.

I'll still be pitching a tent :giggity: or sleeping in the truck when Jeepin. This is for family trips.

15' box, 26' opened up. One of the largest, if not THE largest popup made. I refuse to get a travel trailer, doesn't seem like camping as much to me. Of course this rig has a king & queen size bed, dinette, full kitchen and toilet/shower, so I guess technically this isn't hardcore camping either.
