anyone ever tow with a 5.4 F150? might be going to look at a 04 FX4 this week. anything I should take a closer look at when I go?

Talk to Glenn. His truck is a 5.4 if i'm not mistaken, albeit a few years newer than that I think.

5.4 was around for a long while. Parts are easy to come by and not expensive either.

We have an 08 F250 at work with a 5.4, definitely not a powerhouse, but it has towed me jeep a few times just fine.

Aren't those the motors that shoot spark plugs out? And are nearly impossible to change?

early 5.4's had that issue, as did the early v10s.

mostly fixed in the later models, and the kit to helicoil them isn't that expensive and can be done without head removal.

Which years blew the spark plugs all the way out?
Which years ripped all the threads out when changing spark plugs?
Which years had absolutely terrible exhaust manifold gaskets? (Likely all Fords)
Which years had rain/carwash water pour on the coil packs, ruining a few, yearly

Haven't really heard of other complaints or incredibly common problems.

I bet in 2006 I had weeks where I sold more Ford coil on plug crap than ford oil filters.

2 cents, hope it helps.

I'm looking for a DD that I can occasionally tow my jeep with. they truck does have a tow package. I think the plug issue was cleared up before 04 and I think every 5.4 has coil issues from time to time. being a truck instead of a van should be easy to work on coils and plugs compared to what I'm used to having a few V10 and 5.4 trucks and vans at work.

Other than plug/coil problems and pulling threads or blowing plugs out they are pretty good. Not many real bad problems that I know of. Most of them will need manifolds or bolts put on. Plug threads are easy to fix
I wouldn't be afraid of it. I'd take that over a 3v any day.

It has been a tradition that the past president of the MWC has kept access to the BOD forum as long as the membership has been kept current.

Tonight I received a pm from your new president, macgyvr, informing me that because I resigned early the current board feels that I should no longer have access.

I have given five years to this club, just shy of four of them have been as president, this is the thanks I'm given by the current members of the board.

Your current president presumes to know the reason I resigned, but I can assure you he does not. He hasn't talked or text me since the day before I decided to resign.

I feel this is important for the members to know the type of administration you have leading the club.

I am very saddened that their arrogance has pushed me aside after I have given so much to the club.

I will not be attending winterfest this year as I had originally planned, good luck and have fun.
I'm gonna bring this back up. Curious how long the bod can skirt around this. It is very upsetting to me. I would be infuriated if I was still holding a position.

If the reason for resignation had to do with personal conflict with the BOD or the organisation as a whole then yes access should be limited.

BUT if it simply is a personal conflict then access should be granted as history of tradition as shown.

All actions and decisions made by the BOD have to be made public and answered when questioned by any member of the organization.

Laws of meetings and open information act. No dog in your guys fight just relaying biased info.

Good luck with your drama lamas.

An 04 5.4 will be the 3 valve engine. First off all, its a fantastic powerplant. There are a couple things to discuss however.

Listen for noise from the front of the engine, inside the timing cover. Those engines like to spit the original chain tensioner. It usually takes the cam phasers and the chains out with it. It gets kinda pricey, but not an impossible repair

Second, ask when the plugs were done last. The interval is around 100k believe it or not. Anyway, they do break off in the cylinder head. No big deal, there's a special tool available from Lisle for around 80 bucks (and many other manufacturers) it seems to be the cheapest and best quality. (It's actually the one that matco sells)

If you have any questions please pm me. I'd be glad to help.

The 2 valve engine blasted the plug completely out. Mountain tools sells a nice kot for that. The spark plug problems with the 3v are that the lower portion of it breaks and stays in the head. The special tool grabs ahold of whats left and yanks it out. I do recommend however, adapting your shop-vac down to a drinking straw (culvers works best) and getting any junk out after removal. Now's the time to buy that cheapo bore scope from O'reilly's.

Morning gang......only 13 years left to retirement, so I got that going for me.

Would you take a leather "corvette" jacket as partial trade? :gee:

An a team can would probably be an even trade.

dang pups.....you only have to work as long as you want to, just leave the rest to the tax payers like the rest of the country.

I may hang in for 15-16 yrs depending on how it will work with my income/retirement plan. Still planning on retiring on a boat dock/marina and not working any too hard. Oh, and only hiring good looking seasonal help to pump gas :D
