Important

I wanted one (not finished wasn't a deal breaker), but her parents (long story short, down the road, we will swap homes so they had as much input as we did {their place has three acres not in city limits}) didn't want a basement either. If I ever have a new house built (or garage), it will have a safe room for storms but will also be functional as something like a bathroom. A few years ago I went on a mission trip rebuilding in tornado hit areas. The organization I volunteered with built safe rooms in each house. They are cinder blocks with rebar inside with concrete poured inside. The roof is rebar reenforced concrete and the door is a triple dead bolt inward swinging steel door. They are supposedly rated to withstand an EF5 for five minutes. The picture is of one.

So I scratched the idea of a Colorado and looking for a 99-06 Extended cab silverado. Anyone know of any clean ones on the market? Considering I just accidentally bought an ATV it seems like the best plan. Plus I can tow the XJ on a dolly and haul the ATV at once.

A basement is a must for our new home. We are building a walkout basement home where Camille's current garage sits and it will be angled to look out across the farm. If all goes as planned, we will be starting late fall or next spring. We are going to be able to tear down her garage and start the basement while we still live in our current home...even though the new one will be constructed about 6' from it. When we figured it all up and knew we wanted a nice covered deck, we were able to find a floor plan that is about 1700 sq ft and with a full basement that will be more than enough room for us.

When my wife was looking at houses, one of the things was no basement. In 2008 the water pressure behind the basement walls was so strong that is blew the wall out. House had to be torn down and they had manufactured home put on a crawl space (about 4' deep).

EDIT: Actually, sewage backed up to about 3' deep in the basement. In the backyard of her parents place is buried the remains of the stuff that was in the basement (including a cradle that her grandpa built).

So, did sewage back up, or did the wall come in?
The wall coming in sounds fishy to me, there had to be tell tale signs before hand, years or decades before hand, and preventative measures could have been taken.

Too bad you are so far away, I know a guy who builds custom homes.

You keep telling me stuff like this too...

There is always the "Chateau de Preston" to stay in again! :D

There are Amish framing crews up here that are incredibly affordable and fast. I am thinking that I will use them to rough/dry it in and then sub out what ever else I can not do on my own. There will be a period of transition where we will be gutting our existing house to get the needed things out of it to transfer to the new house. We just installed in the past 5 yrs or less a new HVAC system, Marathon hot water heater, pex manifold and all plumbing, toilets, showers and cabinets. So I am going to reuse a lot of those items to save some $$. Since the house was just refurbished less than 7 yrs ago, it has good siding, all new windows and new interior doors as well, so we are going to salvage those and sell them to recoup a little $ as well.

We keep thinking of downsizing, our house is waaaaaaay to big for three people.
