I'll stick to my $2.99/qt 80W90 Supertech or Coastal if I'm buying from work.

Yeah I'm cheap :D

I've never understood this thinking......

You'll invest the time and money, to lift an XJ 6", install a front locker, TNT's long-arm kit, a new rear axle and rear locker, 34" tires, a winch and a Co2 system, etc.,etc.,etc. But you will 'protect' your investment with the cheapest lubricant on the shelf at China*Mart, or the one from AZ that states on the back 'do not use with anti-slip additive'(used to state 'not for use with limited slip systems)
I'm not questioning you per se but I wish someone could help me understand, why this attitude seems to be prevalent..

My thinking is: my budget is EXTREMELY limited, I'm going with the best products I can possibly get my hands on.

my thinking is.....i wheel my junk often and need to change my gear oil often.....why invest a lot in anything that will only be used a few months anyways....

selling Amsoil must be the 'in' thing now......i've known about 5+ people who recently became dealers in the last few weeks...

I tend to change my diff fluid fairly often (~3-4 months) either as preventative maintenance or after a wheeling trip where the diff has been under water. I have never found water in the fluid, but I'd rather check/change than risk it. If I were to leave the fluid in the diff for a year at a time, I'd consider stepping up to Amsoil or RP.

Do you really think that different brands of conventional gear oil are much different than the label? As long as they meet GL-5 standards, it is all the same.

I'm not going to beat a dead horse here, but after doing some reading on bobistheoilguy.com and other online comparisons, I don't see any reason to spend $11 a quart on something I replace every 3-4 months. This is an interesting comparo of synth fluid vs. conventional. To each their own I guess.

Isn't most if not all stuff sold anymore have the "Meets or exceeds SAE requirements" on the bottle, with the little round symbol?

Sounds like they will be overnighting you a set of LAs.

Crappy luck dude, hope it works out.

i thought that they would, but what it sounds like is that they are just going to ship it UPS Ground whenever they get around to it

First, the only information bob every really put out is on this page: http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/sponsors.htm .Every 'test' he does always seems to end with his conclusion his paying sponsors products are great, and everyone else is the worst stuff ever. I could post up a link to the AMSOIL white paper on gear lube, that shows it is the greatest thing also, but in my opinion its conclusions are just as biased as 'Bob-Schaffear's little paid puppet'

I will look and see if I have any Coastal left in the garage(a friend moved and gave me boxes of stuff) I used to feel like you do... As long as it had the SAE logo, and said GL-5 on the bottle, I used it. I just happened to look at the back of the bottle of Coastal once, when I was changing the fluid in my Trac-loc rear. Here it said in print 'not for use in limited slip systems'. I grabbed another and it said 'not for use with limited slip additives'. I was surprised to say the least. So I grabbed the Valvoline semi-synthetic stuff as it was all the store had that said it was compatible with limited slip additive. I ran that stuff for six months and changed it. I noticed less crud, and gray residue in my diff and the lube looked ALOT cleaner. This was the same wheeling to street ratio. I was given a couple of quarts of RP by another friend who was getting out of racing. I ran it for about another 6 months, and found no crud or grey residue in my diff at all. The lube had the same deep red/purple color as the day I put it in.

I switched to AMSOIL, as my local RP dealer wanted me to pay her shipping costs on a whole case of Severe Gear when I only bought 2 or 3 quarts at a time. I certainly won't be switching back.

Randy, I can't answer for anyone else. But I started selling AMSOIL for two basic reasons. First, to put in my seemingly ever expanding fleet of junk. Three jeeps, and a p/u, plus now a baby-bus. Also to get it for my Dad's Vette. Second, to make a few bucks to help me be able to actually wheel more than 'thinking about wheeling, or living vicariously through Randy's posts' the next few years.

Sorry, I didn't mean to sound like I was questioning your motives. Just pointing out an observation I had recently :kissyou:

Pricey compared to other synthetics... Not really.

RP Severe Gear 75w-140 is $10.95 a quart at O'Reillys.
AMSOIL SG 75w-140 lists at $11.40 a quart...

Compared to dino, sure its quite a bit more expensive.....
But, you already know Good, Cheap, Fast:::Choose two.
I meant pricey compared to non-synths.
Especially when it takes 7 quarts of the stuff to fill EACH axle.
Obviously, I'm a believer but I mean, Dayum.
With the buggy, and the XJ before it, being trailer queens, I'll be getting far more than 6 months out of it, though.

Love the quote. I've always heard the Keith Bontrager (mountain bike icon) version, "Strong, light, cheap, pick any two."

Guy in town just opened a new coffee shop called The Conservative Cafe.
Great place, their sign states, "Coffee Done RIGHT"

They offer coffee in Conservative and Liberal(decaff) blends

Loved the T-shirts for sale:

"Peace through Superior Firepower"
and my favorite:
"Silly Liberal, Paychecks are for Workers."

BTW, what the hell is up with this site? I go to other areas and it pops right up. This thread takes 5 minutes to load.
Jeff, is the MWC sucking hind tit again?

Same Problem

The NAXJA website is probably trying to tell me that I am spending way to much time on here. :D

Having a lot of exprience running some large vB forums....I can tell you that once a thread gets as long as this one has.....it can start causing performance issues with the whole database.....
