3 Valver?

Havent tried this yet. Ive gotten to where I just break them all off and use the special tool to get them out. Im quicker at pulling the old part out with the tool then farting around with the stuck plug, trying not to break it.

If its the three valve Id get the removal tool from lisle and then tackle it on a saturday after Wf. First trip on them kind of sucks but after the first one itll go quicker.

And if its not a 3 valve just go to town on it. Havent pulled threads out on one yet. Done a bunch of them. The only ones Ive had to put inserts in had plugs blow out on them randomly.

No.. it wouldn't be a 3 valve. IIRC, They didn't start in the Lincoln until '02 and the Ford in '03

How uninformed I have been... Someone told me (don't remember who) that it was a 3v, so I figured I'd hold off on it... Actually doing some research now, The Triton V8s were 2-valve up to 2004... So my question is, since its a 2001 and being a 2-valve, are there any concerns or can I just crank them out??

I only know that because I happen to have an '01 5.4l and went through this thought process.

The jeep is wearing me out. I could swear the noise I have is coming from the front axle and everything but the locker has been replaced. I was driving it around the neighborhood earlier and when I shifted it into neutral the noise went away. I'm at a loss on this.

What kind of noise?

Sounds sorta like a ratcheting noise but I could be completely wrong. WF will still be fun this year but I don't think I want to chance driving the Jeep up there.

are you sure it's not the t/c chain?

Flex... a few things you know but I will mention. You need to be good for WF.

wheel U joints turn at the same speed as the tire...unless you are Bloose. Is this noise happening at a high rate?

Sound increase or decrease based on wheels being turned or straight line.

Amount of throttle change the sound?

2h or 4h change the sound?

DS spins 4 times faster than the axles... is this thing making 'fast' noises?

Think about this and plan on driving it out if you are okay with driving it local. If not call me, I'll see what I can do.. this weekend is packed though.

ill add to this flex,

it doesnt take a part to be extremely bad for it to make noise, especially a ratcheting/ticking noise. i had a U joint that was bad, swore up and down it was. didnt have any noticable play, but thats the only thing it could have been. and it was odd, it only happened under load in 4wd. didnt make any noise in 2wd, or coasting/breaking in 4wd. i ended up swapping out the whole shaft between runs on labor day... sure enough. ticking = gone.

i usually go by the rule of thumb, "ill take it off the highway long before i take it off the trail." idea is, if its safe enough for me to trust myself, or lets say a girlfriend or my mother to drive down the highway, its mechanically sound to wheel. my stipulations for a DD are a lot higher than for a wheeler. which is why i bought a new DD. lol.

go wheel, bring spares, if something breaks, replace it. your ticking may go away. :gee:

yes.

order 2 and keep a spare set of pins and springs in the glovebox. That's what fails on those.

I have made the decision to scrap the MJ.

'tis the end of an era of ugly.

It will be stripped and I will look for a new rust free MJ chassis.

Kim has taught me that it's just easier to swap bodies than to fix them.
RIP :(
I love ugly jeeps because you can bash them around and not feel bad in the least.

Not sure if my driving style will change when I rebuild my MJ... or if I will ever rebuild it. It just keeps going.

Craig, you can team up with Ken every year and make it to Winterfest

:yelclap:
I like this idea. At least for spare parts / emergency roadside repairs assistance :gee:

I have the back half of an MJ that I bought with the intention of turning it into a trailer. Once I have it set up properly I will be loading basically an entire spare MJ drivetrain into it, properly weather sealed, and towing it on long trips so I don't have to remember what to pack for spares every time. Also, so I won't be too lazy to load the big heavy portions of the spare parts collection.

Sounds sorta like a ratcheting noise but I could be completely wrong. WF will still be fun this year but I don't think I want to chance driving the Jeep up there.
Try filling your diff. My aussie makes a hell of a racket even in 2wd if it's low on fluid.

I changed it when i put the SYE in.
hope you kept it as a spare. I think after my recent issues I'm going to keep a chain, a set of forks, and a set of fork pads in my spare parts collection when possible.

trust me, if both ken and i can make it next year, i'm down with a car pool.

looks like i will be there sat night of wf this year, just have to see what time i'm getting off the job to know when i'll roll in. its gonna be REALLY hard not to stop at cabelas in hammond though on the way down ;)

things are starting to fall into place a bit...they actually offered me a little more money to help offset the costs of melissa's benefits, so that was nice.

step one now will be cleaning out the shop to make room for some personal stuff...then i'm going to pack/store one room at a time...we'll see how it goes. we are going to sell the subaru too, so that will be another headache. we have payments on it still but its worth a good bit more then out loan, so we should make some money off the deal. should be enough to knock off one of our nagging credit cards. i'll miss that car though...a lot. we are tossing around the idea of cash buying a kj this year. they seem to be fairly reliable, and it would be a decent run around/hunt/fish/camp vehicle. i would rather not have the xj go down in traffic on the gw bridge or in the lincoln tunnel. had a caliper explode once in the tunnel going 65mph at 1am. i made the choice to limp as far as i could get so that when the part stores opened the next morning, i would be well out of the city. i spent 2 hours in the rain doing a full front brake job and bleeding the brakes. don't want to repeat something like that again...

I trust it to wheel, i just don't know if I trust it to drive 2 hours on the interstate at 75 mph. If I had a tow rig i'd bring it but unfortunately I don't. I'm driving it to work tomorrow if the weather gets as bad as they say. Guess I could make sure my AAA is good for the year and chance it! :D Still need to get my shock mounts welded on or i'm wheeling with 3 shocks. I just really hate not having all my vehicles driveable at all times and the Neon is leaking coolant from what I think is the water pump so i need to see if my buddy can change that asap so I don't have 2 broken vehicles!

Glad I'm not driving across the country this week...

mac 'snowpocalypse' gyvr

I'm wondering if the weather here is going to turn into a wet firecracker. Initial predictions were for 5-10" of snow tonight & tomorrow, and it's done nothing but drop since. Now, it's down to a 3-5" prediction and isn't forecast to start until late evening.

Me, I think I'm heading for Rochester late this afternoon, Bell's Brewery is hosting a 10 tap takeover at a tap house tonight.
