Important

make sure you check that the input shaft gear is the same between your 249 and the 242. ZJ's used an odd output shaft. Might be able to swap gears.

The input shaft depth on the 242 I got at the junkyard in Tellico for a grand cherokee was shallower than the 242 that came out of my '91. That's why Nate and I had a disassembled tcase on his tailgate trying to make it work.

From the outside, everything looks the same, but it will stop with about 1/2 an inch to go on the transmission.

IIRC, putting an XJ case in a ZJ you have to cut about 3/4 of an inch off the input shaft. This way you don't have to swap anything. I've done this a couple times with swaps.

Mac - Your coolant bubbling could just be a incorrect mix.

It definitely looks more like dirty water than coolant, so I'm hoping that it was too much water and boiling back than anything else. I plan to flush Tuesday evening.

4:88 pinion is TINY! but they are nice on 35's!

I ran 4.88s in my d30 with a gearless locker and 38 TSL's before going to a 60. I was careful with it and managed to keep it all alive to sell the axles.

You guys and your deep gears. I love my 4.56 gears and 38" tires. But I also wheel alot of different terrain than most of you guys. :D

3.07's and 42's is where it is at...and with a D35, but it is the "strong" one with the bolt in shafts.
