Important

A 96 motor will work fine in a 2000 correct? Just have to build something to hold the coil strip. Also the 96I I saw says the ecm is bad. Could I steal the ecm out of my 96house and plug it in to prove that's the issue?

Isn't the 96 ODBI? If so, that could cause an issue with an IDBII vehicle, right?

This thread is for important chit like guns, pissing & moaning bout work, or what kinda bad nightmare you had bout Aaron, not technical stuff. J/k. Oh, I forgot sheep.

Famous last word before it go's boom, cldddddddlllllllddlllllllllllllllllldllllllllllllll'

WOW :repair:

Could not tell from my craptastic monitor the exact position you were at on the motor, but I've had one 2000 and three 98 flex plates make that exact noise from the back of the motor in the past 2 years. If it's near the front rev' er up and watch it go :passgas::flame:

Aaron, that's the way that it's been for decades. Play for public performance, pay the royalties. Bar owners have tried for years to play their own albums/CDs, only to find out that they aren't allowed to play it for public performance without the royalties. One of my sisters used to own a Hallmark card shop, and almost had to break a couple of employees' fingers, who didn't understand they could play any CD they stocked for sale (as an advertisement) without royalties, but could not put their own CDs in the store system.
that's so retarded I'd probably just ignore the rule. How the hell are they gonna catch you, send hired goons into the store?

Copyright law is so complicated and full of BS gotchas. Frankly I usually swipe music via less than legal methods and if I like it, I buy a couple albums from the band, if I don't, I delete it. That is, when I don't just listen to it on youtube or pandora/last.fm.

???????????????????????????????????????????????????

1. 96 is OBDII
2. You just gave 100% incorrect, confusing advise.
3. the year ranges various 4.0s will fit in has almost zero to do with the year ranges of the engine management systems and more to do with the exhaust systems and sensor change years. Even then, if you are suitably determined you can put any year 4.0 in any year XJ with any year engine management if you are prepared to do some custom fab or careful choices of parts to make it all match up.

kman, the answer is "it depends". federal/49 state or cali emissions 2000? If it is a cali 2000 with the pre-cats and multiple o2 sensors you can do it but will need to stick your head or preferably a good TUPY 0331 head from Odessa/ACH/etc on it, or get an adapter plate or do other customization. If you have a federal 2000 with no precats there should be a way to put a 7120/0630 headed 91-99 4.0 into it with only customizations to the exhaust system and some brackets to hold the coil rail, or convert to the viper coil pack like Talyn did. I think 85xjwoody got his working, not sure though, maybe he can give more details on this? Unless I only confused him or gave bad info when he was putting it together :shiver:

If that is a flexplate, which it almost sounded like, you can replace it with one off a 91 through 01 or just buy a new one. They suck to replace but IIRC you have a shop so it shouldn't be too bad.

If it isn't the flexplate, don't rev it till it blows or seizes, it will make you kick yourself pretty bad when you go to unbolt the torque converter from the flexplate and can't crank the motor over fully because it's seized or there are rods dangling everywhere.

.

you'd be surprised...i lot of places get busted every year and the fine is pretty outrageous. i get asked all the time to use music for preshow and intermission for plays and musicals all the time, but i cant do it unless the theatre has a blanket license to play the music. if they dont have one, i make it clear to them that it is there job to pay the fine if they would get caught. its a stupid rule, i agree.

I was taking a trip out to LA tooling around in my Chevrolet. smoking a number and digging on the radio.

Ken, HIGH FIVE!!

wait what

the hell for? :laugh2:

For laying down some knowledge.

Just imagine that was Borat asking for that high five.

Thank you sir!!!!

What happens when a flex plate goes "bad"? Cracked or something? I've also seen something about the bolt loosening up. This thing also has a Jank almost 2 inch trans drop that is welded to the unibody. It needs to come out but has been one of those things.

I didn't know if 96 was, that was what the ? was for. I said, if so also.

when my flexplate/torque converter bolts were loose it sounded like a low end knock. when i put my ears to it, i could tell it was coming from the bellhousing/rear motor area. i knew it was in the bellhousing immediately because it would go away as soon as i put it in gear

Basically it cracks around the bolt ring that holds it to the crankshaft flange.

There are a few reasons - excessive drivetrain vibration could cause it I guess, but probably not. If someone did a poorly done trans replacement or engine replacement and didn't properly torque the fasteners, or forgot to put in the inspection cover / aluminum dust shield on the front of the bellhousing, that can definitely cause it as the trans and engine will "squirm" against each other, and any departure from perfect collinearity between the crankshaft centerline and transmission geartrain centerline will result in the flexplate acting like more of a U-joint than a flexplate, which will very very quickly fatigue crack it. A bent torque converter can cause it, but you'd probably notice that in other ways first. Another common cause is a failure to properly clean/de-rust the machined surface of the block where the aluminum plate and bellhousing go onto it, or a failure to properly clean the aluminum plate or the machined surface of the bellhousing where it mates to the other parts. All that has to be pretty clean, the engine to bellhousing alignment dowels on the two "wings" of the block need to be in good shape, and the bolts need to be tightened to spec - any of those can throw things off.

Are you hearing the sound from somewhere within the motor or more toward the back? How's the oil pressure?

What I would do, from most to least expensive, assuming cali emissions -
* pick up a new motor (00-01) in good shape, put a new TUPY 0331 head on it, drop it in. Buy a flexplate as well just in case. If you pull the motor and it's the flexplate, stuff the flexplate in and put your motor back, then put the motor you bought to the side as a spare.
* pick up a new motor (00-01) in good shape, drop it in. Same flexplate/spare idea as before.

Assuming you feel like fabricating things or have federal emissions / no pre-cats:
* pick up a new motor (preferably 96-99 or so with the NVH mark cast on the driver front side of the block but anything from about a 91 up will fit)
* use the 91-99 regular style manifold and manifold gasket, use your intake manifold and all sensors
* use a Viper coil pack, Talyn wrote a thread on how to do it. Mount it to the inner fender and extend the primary cable to reach it and use longer secondary/spark plug wires.
* you will need a custom downpipe to connect your 00/01 style exhaust system to the 91-99 manifold, but that's about the only custom stuff you'll need. You should be able to build one by cutting the downstream flange off your 00/01 downpipe at the 3 bolt flange that connects to the cat, then get an exhaust adapter tube that will adapt it to be the size of a 91-99 downpipe (there are a few variations, I'd suggest a 95/96 as they are supposedly larger diameter) and weld it all together.
* again, if you pull the motor and find a cracked flexplate, just put a new flexplate in and FIRI.

This will only work if you have the federal emissions setup with no precats and the usual 2 o2 sensors, otherwise you'll run into issues.

If the bolts are loose, it'll sound about like that but less regular, and if you goose the throttle it'll sound horrible. It should sound fairly normal while driving under power though.
