Important

So, according to the people on the radio in Madison this morning, The Koch Brothers each voted 450,000 times or the dollar bills them self actually cast the votes.

Strange....

ask any woman... 3" makes a difference.

blocks are going to be prone to axle wrap, trashing your springs. full lift springs arent usually designed with towing in mine.

TIFWIW

This. Even just 2" lowering blocks with my 4.5" lift springs in my mj were causing very noticeable axle wrap with a load in the bed.

On the other hand, if it is a block lift at least you can remove it easily.

We went camping this weekend, just got caught up.

I wouldn't touch a Dodge 1/2 ton. Between fuel and trans rebuilds it will be expensive. About the gas vs. diesel thing, I'm close to selling the Sub for a 3/4 ton gasser GM truck. Only thing that's stopping me at the moment is the fact that the Sub is paid for... and I like it. Just hate paying $.30 more per gallon when that old 6.5L gets worse MPGs than a modern 6.0L gas engine.

Does the diesel really get worse mileage? I would have thought the 6.5L did ~15mpg at least? I have a buddy with a 6.0L work truck and he says low teens is about all the better it does. He may be driving it like a company vehicle though. And I think Tyler said his 6.0L wasn't much for mileage either, especially if he was pulling something (I want to say around 8mpg?)

I checked out an 06 Cummins last night, so many things wrong... ABS, airbag, brake lights were on, the bed was beat to hell and the floor had waves in it, tires were MTs and had a couple 32nds tread at best. It also had an aftermarket clutch and insanely stiff pressure plate, and for whatever reason the clutch pedal had about 1" of travel and took everything I had to push the clutch down. I drove down the road and back and my leg was already cramped up. I must be too much of a sissy to drive a truck like that. Time to call a shop and see if I can get my PSD fixed up before the Crawl.

That 06 Ram clutch has to be jacked up, there's no way that it should be that stiff or have travel that short. Shoot, the SBC conOFE I've got in my '99 CTD probably has equal or less pedal effort than my 94 XJ. If it was that stiff, I doubt that I'd have even moved the truck, let alone taken it for a test drive.

Since I put all new wheel bearings in my 99 CTD's rear axle, I've actually gotten +1 mpg, I'm up around 20 mpg at 70 mph, and that's with Catcher #5 loaded out of the Smarty. I just put the fuel saver program back in this morning, I'll have to check the next tank of fuel.

I was hoping you'd weigh in on that, Jeff. He said it was a SB dual-disc clutch and a 3800# pressure plate. I was curious how a stock or close-to-stock truck would have driven by comparison. Also the shifter throw was very short, I was always second-guessing if I had actually gotten it into gear or if the synchros were worn and it wasn't fully in gear. Maybe that's just how the G56s are. I felt like if I bought it, then every time I'd have to drive around town I'd hate my life, and combined with all of the other stuff needing attention there was just no way I was interested.

20mpg sounds fantastic, that'd be double what my Ford is getting. Then again, I clearly have some underlying issues with that. The exhaust smells strongly of raw diesel, so I'm guessing that's killing my mileage. Then again, it has 430,000 miles and only one injector has a Reman stamp on it.

I thought that all dodges of your generation got 30mpg, towing 30k, at 80 mph???

Almost got one side done on my rear wheel bearing project on the F350...

Sideshows "WNE" has 291k on it...and he bought it knowing it prolly needs injectors...

I have got to put a new set of injectors in my CTD, gonna use Bosch RV275s. Mine runs fine above freezing, but it got very cold-blooded late in the winter. I figure that one or more of the injectors isn't popping at the right pressure. The puff of white smoke at start-up is a pretty good indicator of that.

SB dual-disc clutches are built for high torque applications. I doubt it'd need a dual-disc if the ECM is still stock. Aren't those OEM clutches dual-mass? Maybe that's what the sales 'droid meant (not like I'd expect him to know the difference.) It might be worth a call to SBC to ask. I've never driven a G56 so I've got no idea how they shift.

Something else to consider: master/slave hydraulics. I know that the original set on my CTD gave up the ghost before the OEM clutch did, and I have a suspicion that a lot of clutch problems are actually hydraulics issues, not fully releasing, or fully engaging.

<chuckle> I look at what I fill up with, not what's on the overhead display.

Last time I went to Moab, for 2011 Fall Fling, from MN to UT down to the Grand Canyon and back through CO, over 3,500 miles, I averaged 12.6 mpg loaded down to just under 15k GCW. I was also keeping up with traffic which is definitely turning the engine faster than it's sweet spot.

Something else about that '06 CTD. Sounds like "rode hard and put away wet" applies. It definitely needs some work, it wouldn't surprise me if I could drop $5k on repairs. I don't think I'd consider giving much over $5k off the lot for it, there's just too many red flags being thrown up.

I like that name... and I'm guessing I'm way overdue for them. I think I can come by OE replacements for around $1500, of course then there's the temptation of paying a little more for some upgraded ones as long as I'm spending the money and doing the work.

It was a private seller. It had head studs, 100HP injectors, EFI Live, and a straight piped exhaust that droned quite a bit and I didn't care for it much. He was the proprietor of a diesel performance shop that I hadn't heard of... I agree, all the signs were there that this truck had led a pretty rough life, and he was firm on $16,500 for it. It was worth a look but I'm glad I didn't have to drive far to see it.

 $16.5k [JolietJake]for this chunk of $hit?[/JolietJake] NFW. He, of all people, should know that performance mods never pay off at sale unless you've got the right buyer on the hook (and I ain't it!) Sounds to me that he's looking for a sucker, and he's going to be *VERY* hard to find after the sale.

It's not that bad I suppose. Guesstimating 10MPG pulling the camper through Indiana hills. Camper weighs ~6300lbs. Empty probably closer to 16-18 highway. She's about worn out though, 221k on original drivetrain. Once the HG pops I'll probably sideline it for a rebuild with head studs, bigger turbo, program, etc. I shuffle vehicles a lot, but in all likelyhood unless I stumble into a screaming deal on a CCLB I'll keep the Sub. Always been a fan of the GMT400 platform.

I let everyone else do the legwork. I read where those guys post.

Madison has always been known as 10sq miles surrounded by reality, but I will expand that to include the whole of Dane County. Definitely out of step with a majority of the State on this one.
