Subaru had the NA motors figured out by then. They like to eat turbos because they needed a filter in the oil line for the turbo. there are kits to fix that.

The 05 era cars failed because THEY DO HAVE filters on the turbo. They actually put an ultra tiny wire screen inside the banjo bolt going into the turbo. This thing clogs every 40-60,000 miles. The fact that it could clog always concerned me.... Why would an engine produce solids large enough to plug a metal screen! Premium filters should be catching this stuff long before it gets near the turbo. Also the turbo is bushing instead of ball bearing. My only Subaru experience has been on 2005.5 - 2.5T engines.. (I hauled my former bosses legacy GT and his wifes Outback wagon to the dealer 3 or 4 times in 2.5 years.

Big '.02 unimportant cents... ' Hank

I missed that part when you explained it to me!

Any Subie under consideration would be an '03 or newer. Basically I'm trying to figure out if I want to go the SUV route or car route.

Please take into consideration what I said in my post.... Zero exaggeration going on. When they fail they will break the shaft and puke the oil into the intake duct work and down the exhaust pipe, maybe ruining the cats. There is no good one if it fits the same specs as the 2005.5 cars with the 2.5T

Friends dad had a newer Forrester (04 or 05), turbo went out, he replaced it. Went bad again, he got it fixed and got a GMC Terrian.

Spent yesterday working our asses off on a piece of ground I just acquired...it has been left unattended for about 15 years and was all grown up in cedars and hedge trees. After a 10 hour shift with 3 skid steers w/ tree sheers and grapple buckets, a full size tractor and loader, 2 guys with chainsaws and Camille being our parts runner and lunch lady, we wiped out 40 acres. It has about 5 HUGE brush piles that are over a story tall each, some close to 2 stories tall.....it is gonna be a awesome bonfire place very soon! I just increased the land value of that piece by 1/3 and it only took a day of time and about $2000 overall. So glad to have that done now...I can finally get back to the shop this evening to work on my Jeep and check the trailer over for WF.

Cheese "gonna buy a new grapple bucket of my own, soon!" Man

<chuckle> Tyler, you'd just LOVE seeing what happens when my brother takes out a block of cherry trees. Usually 15-20 acres of trees.

I originally thought about running a dozer everywhere, but it leaves everything so rough and then I have to go and seed everything down behind it....but dozers are more fun!

My brother cuts the trees off, leaving a 3' stump or so, and collects the tops in brush piles. He'll rent a big dozer with a ripper blade and will pop out all of the stumps in 15 acres in a day or so. Stumps also get rolled around to knock the dirt off, dried for a few months and burned as well.

We used to run over the ground with a drag & disk for a year or so. Steve bought an 8' rototiller, and he can do ground prep with that in just a couple of passes. The block he pushed out last summer will be planted this spring.

Driving home from work last night, my headlight upgrade paid off. Was driving down a country road and there was two does in the middle of the road. Because of my brighter headlights, seen them and was able to stop far enough back to let hte two pass and the third that was getting ready to cross the road.

if the turbo has been replaced recently, there is more to the re install than just slapping a turbo on...when ours went they replaced the cats, and dismantled the engine and intake to clean it. they also replaced some oil lines and don't remember if its still a part of the job, but for a while they were removing the filters in the banjo bolt. we had ours done at 60k and now at 130k its still going fine. the oil causing the issues would actually not be caused by sediment, usually there would be a small sludging that would occur, but the banjo bolt filter was so small it would clog. (thuse the oil line replacement). i wish i would have taken pictures of the little oil distrbutor thing that routes the oil to the turbo before they dismantled it. it looks a lot different to me now. they also strip and replace and clean most of the parts of the oil system. when i change my oil at 3k, it still looks brand new even with 130 k...im going to take it to the dealership soon to get a new banjo bolt though, just incase. there are you tube vids on how to do it yourself so we'll see if its a huge pain or not. besides that one issue, its a really nice car...in fact my wife likes it so much she wants to get a subaru forester when we have kids...of course i will be getting the 3.0 non turbo motor in the forester just for peace of mind.

here is the bolt in question

Get your bumstops set up?

you want a 32 for a spare?

It didn't have the intake manifold leak.....I am shocked. Water in the tail lights, yep had that also. Wheel bearings go bad, yep twice.

I am wondering how the odometer is stuck. It is computer display and hooked into the PCM or something, it can't be stuck unless the part that controls it is bad. That is worth the scarp and that is all. With a bad engine, wheel bearings, and the other issues, wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole.
