And, if you've got an 8.25. do *NOT* pull the carrier if you're not ready to set carrier preload and run a test pattern on the gear set.

Whoa, can you elaborate on that? I would expect to have to do that if the carrier is replaced with a different one, but not if I'm just pulling my open carrier, installing a locker and reinstalling the same carrier.

Are you saying I have to re-set the preload *any* time a carrier is removed and reinstalled? I should probably know this before I put my Lockright in. :dunce:

Carrier preload on an 8.25 is set by eccentric adjusters under the bearing caps. My understanding is that you can't even pull & replace the existing carrier without going through at least a partial gear setup on a Chrysler 8.25. You won't need to set pinion depth, but you will need to set preload and check the gear pattern. It's not like a Dana axle with shims between bearings & carrier, those you can pop out and replace without any problem.

Somebody prove me wrong.

You do not need to pull the carrier on an 8.25 to install a lunchbox locker....I didn't anyway.

Is that a thin/thick ring gear issue? Some ratios may have a ring gear that's too thick and the carrier has to be removed to pull the ring gear (to remove the cross shaft), and others don't?

It looks like 8.25s don't have a carrier break so all ring gears will clear the cross shaft? That would make it a hell of a lot easier.

When installing deep gears, 4.56 or deeper, you do need to grind the end of a tooth to get the cross shaft in on an 8.25 axle.

I think the cross shaft issue comes into play with the dana 30 gear teeth getting in the way. I installed mine with 4.10s already in the 8.25 and didn't have to pull the carrier.

4.10 gears install without issues in 8.25s, IIRC. It's 4.56 gears and the elusive 4.88 gears that require gear tooth grinding.

You are correct sir, i had to pull the carrier to install my lockright.

yep... side adjusters instead of shims are a blessing and a curse. On one hand you don't need a shim set and a mic to do a gear setup, on the other hand you can't pull the carrier without having to reset preload and backlash.

I really wish they made more axles like the 14 bolt, it's got pinion depth shims under the pinion housing (bolted in, so no setup bearings needed), a whopping huge crush sleeve to set pinion preload, and side adjusters for backlash + carrier preload. Not having to worry about setup bearings and screwing up the pinion threads taking the nut on and off while setting the gears up would make me much less worried about doing my own gears.

On the subject of lunchboxes I've been thinking about ordering an Aussie for my 29 spline 8.25. Opinions? Better suggestions?

Pretty sure ther still on backorder but I haven't checked in a couple weeks
