Important

Don't beat yourself up over it. I've done my fair share of stupid buys. It's easy to get so used to being around Jeeps (and 4x4 ones at that), that you could assume if it has a handle then it's 4x4. Worst case you gotta throw a transfer case in it.

And change the transmission tailhousing, I guess. Hmmmm.... yea maybe I'd be taking it back.

If I remove the tailhousing will a NP231 bolt right up?

my god, that really blows man.

did they ever say it was 4wd? If so, threaten court...

I would not bother trying to get some money back, bring it back and leave with your money if you can. You will need a new output shaft and tailhousing for the transmission to put that transfer case on it.

Yep even the paper work that I signed says 1997 Jeep Cherokee Sport 2 door 4x4.

I took a closer look and the front D30 is a disconnect housing out of an older XJ. So I'm not sure whats going on with this thing. Another thing is that the entire motor is yellow which leads me to believe that it is a replacement motor.

Grab the VIN and do a Carfax. If you want to sink another $20 into it, or whatever it costs. I'm suspecting some sketchy stuff there.

(I haven't done this myself so I could be way wrong) It's not just removing the tailhousing, it's replacing it with the 4wd one so that you can bolt up the T-case. If you have the right tailhousing, it should be straightforward. I get the impression that it is a pain in the ass since most people just buy a trans with the correct output on it. I think someone in this thread recently with through converting 2wd to 4wd so maybe they can chime in? (Can't remember who)

Is the motor painted yellow, or just sprayed on top with a greenish-yellow paint? Because that's cash for clunkers material right there...

nope. Wish it was that easy, my MJ would already be 4wd.

Sounds like a previous owner was an idiot. Also sounds like you have everything you need to get your money back or bury them in court.

that would explain the wheels. I'd call them and ask for a $500 refund or they can have the jeep back. buyers remorese .

Jeff just found out ne did the compression test before he even bought it. A bit of good news. Brendan, who is this dealership? I would go up thee and demand a trans and t-case or you are taking him to court for selling you a vehicle that wasnt as described. If not tell him to shove that jeep up his ass and you want your money back!

Community Chrysler Dodge Jeep in Martinsville, IN (same people who own Town & Country Chrysler in Bloomington and have been messing around with my Dad's 2011 for 2 out of the 3 weeks he has owned it)

What are you thinking, ~$500 - $600 for the right transmission and TC?

Aim for 800, say you need a non-lousy front axle too.

If they won't give it to you, tell em it's either that or they take the damn jeep back, then haggle.

this doesn't sound bad. price is right and the tube is 1/8" larger OD than others.

AJ's are NAXJA sponsors too, right?

Yes, I started clicking sponsor banners at the top and did come price comparisons to see what I could buy...cause sometimes its cheaper to buy rather than fab in the long run. Whats your time worth sometimes...

Yup, AJ is a good guy. He fell on some hard times a while back but I believe he has fully recouped and has come back swinging!

Cheese "support those who support us" Man

Prayers to your brother. Is he a smoker or is this something just out of the blue...either way it sucks.

I was gonna order from AJ's til I found out that a local place that sells 4x4 stuff (baseline 4x4) has it for $170...and I can drive to them and pick up so basically no shipping...hopefully they have it in stock...

You also made a comment that it should hold up to the baby jeep...maybe...I just replaced the aftermarket control arms on the baby jeep cause they were all smashed up...i guess from wheelin too hard :) Need to wheel the buggy more...

Ok fine I'll spill.
I bought a 97 2 door XJ sport with a 5-speed transmission. Dealer wanted $1,900 for it. I went out and took it for a test drive. It drove really nice and handled well. I went to shift into 4wd and the shifter didn't do anything, the linkage must have been diconnected. No big deal I can hook that up when I get home. The salesman says I have to be stopped to engage it in 4wd which is obviously wrong. Didn't even think a thing about it. I look under it, keep in mind its 3* outside and snow on the ground. Has a D30/D35. We settle on a price. $1,450 for the jeep, $1,700 out the door CASH.

I get it home and try to take some pics. I get on the trailer and look under it. There is no effin' transfer case or front DS!!! You'd think after being around jeeps for 6 years and owning two of them I would take the time to ensure it had a TC. Now I gotta see if the dealer will a) take it back or b) give me some of my cash back so I can buy a TC and front DS

bm 'i am a moron' yohn

I'm a moron, that is all.

mac 'note to self, always check for a trasfer case' gyvr

Tyler: Thoughts and prayers.

Hmmm....rotary engines....my wife had an RX-4. Using oil and backfiring are signs of a rebuild, hers needed one at 65K, we dumped it.

Rev

Just drove by and looked at it and its clean!!! I am gonna stop back by here in the next hour or so and get a better look and hear it run. May even take her for a spin. If it smokes and shit I wont get it. I figure though if its that clean, I can get my money back parting it out.............or put an LSx motor in it! :D

I've had 3 RX 7s; an 80, 87, and 88. That's really low mileage for an 88. The fact that it's obviously done a lot of sitting would worry me- I've always been told the seals (at least on a NA rotary) are just as likely to go bad from sitting dry, as they are from high mileage. Obviously if it's a turbo, boost has it's own dangers. My 87 had 202K when a Blazer finally killed it, and it didn't smoke, leak, or act strangely otherwise. But, something to remember- rotaries use oil by design. Since there's no crankshaft to sling it, they pump it into the combustion chambers. They'll burn a quart in 500 miles of hard driving. But, with only 3 moving internal components, there's not a lot to go wrong, aside from seals.

If you do buy it, I've got the 87 FSM here on a shelf. It's got the rebuild procedures and all sorts of good stuff. It saved me piles of cash when working on mine.

Also, they aren't great Autocrossers- but that didn't stop me from having a blast in mine. A long time ago in Columbus... :)

Dealer's not going to take it back, willingly anyways. I went and talked to a local car dealer I know and he says that if they were in that situation that they would take the car back because it was not as they advertised.

He also said that if I can prove that an advertisement brought me into the store to purchase that particular vehicle, which it did, i could file for buyers remorse. Because I called "Hector" the online guy for the dealership and asked if it was 4wd even though the shifter plate was missing and he told me it was. The salesman on the test drive told me that to get it into 4wd I had to be stopped. But never actually got it into 4wd. I never would have actually gone to see the vehicle if it was a 2wd vehicle.

The GM at the Martinsville dealership also said that because i told the salesman after the sale that I was going to use it as a "parts car" that they wouldnt take it back and that because the jeep came off the trailer (front tires slid off the ramps in the snow) he wouldn't take it back. He also said that when they put up an ad they just run the VIN# and put up what the number reads and that they aren't responsible because i bought it as is. (In my opinion its like selling someone an F-250 but then later finding out it was truly a F-150, you'd have to take it back its not the same vehicle.)

I'm going to be talking to a lawyer in the morning about my situtaion. Hopefully we can get it straightened out.

I'll give you $500 for it.
