It is from Wisconsin. It's a '98 4 door 4.0l 5 speed with a little over 200k on it. I am told the rockers are rusty. My current jeep has rust on the top of the windshield that lets water leak in and I would rather not go through all that work just to keep my 4 banger around... Is there anything else I should look for?

A transfer case.

There better be one :) he says the rockers and a little bit of the rear fender/quarter panel have rust. I'm hoping its something I can cut off and cover with the rear tj flares I have and some 2x6 tube...

The transfer case is MWC inside joke. Ask bmyohn why you need to look for a transfer case.

You should page though the "Important" thread. Not nice to Hyjack.

962door- Good luck with your Jeep find. Just do the usual walk around. If it runs good, drives good, and shifts good, the rest is just time and money ;) Be sure you don't pay a ton. If the rockers have some minor rust, the floors could be fine. But get down and look. If the rockers are major junk, the floor probably isn't too far behind.

BTW, a rust spot in the upper left gutter at the Windshield is a normal feature on the new body style. If you fix it before it gets leaky, you have no problems.

It has no rust around the windshield. The rockers are shot. The floors aren't bad, but I'm going to clean them up and weld in some 2x6 for rockers. It runs super smooth and I already have a 99 intake manifold with a throttle body spacer that I hope to get on next weekend along with a budget boost.

I'm sure I'll leave out some details but to keep it short and sweet, I'll give you the jest of it. bmyohn wanted to buy an 97+ XJ with the 4.0, AW4 & 231 to swap front end, interior and drivetrain into an MJ. He found one at a dealer for the right price and took a look at it. During his test drive he tried to pull it into 4wd and it wouldn't budge. The salesman told him it needed to be sitting still to go into 4wd. (We all know better, even Brendan does, but he just dismissed it as nothing.)

He loads the trailer up, takes it home and finds that it's missing a transfer case. And that his 97+ XJ has a disco front axle. So, it has a front axle (that's not correct to the year) but no transfer case. It was advertised as a 4wd... He battled with them for a while and after a good couple months or so, his lawyer convinced them to take it back and refund his money.

So henceforth from that discovery, we give Brendan all the hell we can anytime someone mentions looking for another XJ or whatever. Anytime it can be even the least bit relevant, we bust his balls on it. It's always good for a laugh. And when people get screwed by their own stupidity, we call it getting "yohned."
