Yeah no shit... Almost invariably cheaper to fix the problems than to buy a replacement. What does he think, anyway - at seven years old as the newest, is another XJ going to have fewer problems? At least with the old junk you know what your problems are already...

Sadly, I stopped reading JP regularly about the time they built the red "budget" MJ. Remember that?
$50.00 junkyard flares /grill peices, etc.
Cheap steel wheels/used tires
$97.00 Rustoleum paint job
4wd conversion with dana 44 front axle, 7" long arm lift kit and 37' tires on bead locked wheels,...

I never even looked for the next build article.

When I realized I was turning to the back to look at the pic of Bree first, I quit reading it at the store.

How serious is a magazine that won't do the maintenance and upkeep the rest of us poor saps have to do? I wish having a built rig I was too lazy to work on was my biggest concern.

Suggestions- give it away.

Well, to be fair, each one of these guys has at least five Jeeps of various vintages (and states of build), not to mention the DC Press Fleet vehicles loaned to them for long-term reviews/builds.

I would guess that many of the guys here on the Forums are like myself, though: their XJ's are either their dual-purpose, DD, or one-and-only off-road vehicle.

Personally, I'd like to see JR built up even more wildly: reinforced unibody and 37's might just be a trend-setting project... either way I'd just like to see more XJ's in the magazine: after all, 42000 :NAXJA: members can't all be wrong...

No kidding....

The bummer is, I'm a firm believer that once you let a modern vehicle sit for any period of time it's pretty much ruined. All the electrical stuff starts having problems, gaskets dry out, etc. And JR seems to be no exception. There's a new tranny leak, power steering leak, all the electrical switches and buttons work intermittently, and there are tons of new rattles, shakes, and groans.
Um yeah, about that, sounds like perfectly normal XJ to me. It's all part of the fun! It's like a game..."what noise will my XJ make today?"

It's when it stops making funny noises is when I get really concerned.

BS tim, you have whined about every lil noise since I've known you...

I was the one who never gave a shit... And look how many times it blew up on me... 3-7

There's a difference about complaining about the normal things, such as window switches and what not working, or seals leaking....and complaining about serious issues like binding, u-joint grinding, and axle wrap.

And true, you never gave a shit...big difference between you and me. And while my Jeep may be a tad banged up at the moment, it hasn't let me down yet.

Last night on "Entertainment Tonight" or one of those puff shows, they did a feature on a Las Vegas stripper that was still at it at age 80. My first thought was "Bree, is that you, honey?"

In all honesty, if they have access to all these different rigs, especially nice new manufacturer demo's, there is no excuse not to be able to work on a given rig. You wouldn't need to worry about it as a DD if you have to take it out of service to have some work done on it.
