I need a resonator.... Please help

I need something for my exhaust.

Picked up an iron rock off road exhaust for very cheap.

Went to put it in, and I am missing a catalytic converter. I am still wondering how i never saw that before. So, I installed the exhaust anyway, but now need to do something to quiet it down.

What is a decent resonator?

thanks!

If you weren't against putting a cat back on then you wouldn't be looking for a resonator now would you?

An important part of your problem is that if you don't have a CEL (check engine light), then there's an o2 simulator hiding around your jeep somewhere. If that's the case then you'll have to find it and remove it before installing a new cat and o2 sensor.

If you do have a CEL, and it's for the o2 sensor, then replacing your cat and/or o2 sensor will take care of that.

As far as resonators go, most people just use glass packs. They do a decent job as resonators.

I am thinking flowmaster resonanter, but thinking cat would be the better option. As for the cel eliminator, is it electrical or just a spacer on the o2?

Any decent sources for a cat?

the 1992 doesn't have a secondary O2 sensor downstream of the cat so you should be fine as is without one and I don't believe you have a simulator plugged into anything. That would be a small electric box which plugs into the same plug that a O2 sensor would and then sends a false signal back to the PCM to make it believe all is correct.

Rockauto.com should have what you want that is direct fit for the converter otherwise. Always like to buy dynomax walker parts as they are decent quality and not expensive.

The cat is a Federally Mandated Emissions part and really does need to be in the rig if you drive it on the street. What is the point of removing it? Better performance? Not so you would notice.

I run a Magnaflow High Flow Cat and a 2.5" Heartthrob Cat-Back exhaust. The only reason I run the 2.5" over the stock 2.25" is due the the Supercharger. Well, that and eventually I'll be going to 4.7 Litres...

It's an 01 cherokee. Never updated my profile... I did not remove the cat. It came like this, and I never noticed till I went to put the cat back on it...

A cat would help quiet it some, and keep the feds happy. As far as mufflers, I can be of no help. I'm still on the stock muffler. I have a Dynomax cat back waiting to go in, just waiting on the time and money. A friend was running a Borla setup and it sounded really nice, but they're pricey. I think Ryno is running Spintech and it sounds great!

Darkey, I'm running a full Borla, all the way from the head back, and have been for 10+ years.

Needs to be there regardless where you drive it, if the vehicle originally came with one. Unless it can be classified as a "race car" and isn't licensed.

If it's an 01, then what I originally said applies. Not only that, but chances are it's California emissions equipped (I think all 2001's are) which means that you'll need to buy:

  • A new header which will have two "precats" - one in each down pipe (You're allowed to purchase aftermarket cats since they're already missing. But the problem is, you're still not allowed to "modify" the factory emissions design which means that you can't buy the aftermarket y-pipes with the cats in them which would allow you to use a much better header.)

  • Two new upstream o2 sensors

  • Two new downstream o2 sensors

There are no o2 sensor mods. I have magnaflow cat on the way, a resonantor too, 2 o2 sensors(just cause), and a Borla exhaust for one of my jks....

Will update later

That's against EPA regs. You have to replace the cats in the exact same manner as they were from the factory, which is in the exhaust manifold. Not to mention your PCM is looking for two upstream o2's and two downstream o2's - so you'll still have a CEL doing it the way you are.

Is your CEL on or not?

There is no cel, all o2 sensors are there. Please save the epa/legal crap too. I know its wrong, and I am fixing it. The previous owner simply cut the cat, and replaced it with a straight pipe. The one removed is the one right before the muffler

No, you're not fixing it. Don't tell me to save the legal crap when I'm telling you how to fix it, *legally*.

If you're talking about the downstream cat (the one right before the muffler) then yes, the magnaflow cat will work and be kosher with the EPA. And in that case, you don't need to buy any o2's. It's obviously not going to hurt anything if you do though.

What "resonator" did you end up buying?

WOW MAN TIME TO SWITCH TO DECAF?

anyway if any of us here had read the OP carefully you would see he stated he was "missing a cat" not all of them. To the OP what you bought for the replacement cat will go right on and probably give you the sound reduction you want, if still too loud check out the dynomax catalog, they have a bunch of different sized (diameter as well as length) resonators which are basically just small bullet mufflers that you could install in between the cat and the IRO cat back i put one on a camaro that had full length headers a couple years ago to quiet that down. I also wouldn't bother with the O2 sensors if you bought the ones that are located downstream of the 2 smaller cats as they are only there to make sure the cats are still working and have nothing to do with how the motor runs or your MPG if you don't have a CEL on right now they are good.

Milford's being OTT after being chewed out last month, so don't take his tone in this thread to heart;)
