I have this idea

You have already made up your mind. Sell the XJ and get the Subaru.

If you aint in debt you aint livin!!!

Just kiddin, take this into concideration: You are going to buy someone elses junk that you have no idea what they have done to it and your gunna sell your junk that you know everything about. You have $1500 left to pay on it and that is a whole lot cheaper that what you will pay on any other car. I'd stick with the XJ not because I am bias but because of the endless supply of parts at the junkyard. To each his own though. Only you know what you want to do.

Perhaps, but I did buy my current junk with no idea what the PO did to it (turns out, some dumb sheisse).

That's true about the junkyard parts, though, which is one reason I got a jeep after I got rid of my Subaru.

honestly if ya only have 1500 bucks left on the XJ.....i'd say focus on payin that off, then keep it.

also have to realize....even with newer subs...unless you can find one you literally can pay cash for, most banks wont finance a vehicle with over 100k on the clock.

If you're like many people and plan on blowing $5,000+ on a wedding, you're just throwing money away in my book.

Elope & spend $1500 on a honeymoon. Have a small reception afterwards... whatever it costs to cater BBQ. The rest of the money: pay off the jeep loan and stick to moderate wheeling. Enough to have fun but don't do the stuff that tends to break it.

Adjust the $5000 : $1500 ratio according to your budget.

Same goes for meggabuck diamond rings. Don't support the diamond monopoly. Get a good looking (other) pretty stone. Maybe a ruby. Diamond engagement rings are a recent invention no more than 100 years old, created to make a few people very rich in South Africa, New York City, and a few other places.

I didn't spend a fortune on the ring, but I didn't skimp on it either. Also, we're both geologists, so I got a nice flawless diamond since it'd be something she'd really enjoy.

Eloping wouldn't have been bad, except she wanted to have a ceremony for her parents, though we're not spending a lot on it. We're really spending the bulk towards the honeymoon since that's where all the fun is. Whatever we don't spend is going towards our debt when we get back.

Giving other people a bunch of money every month is a serious drag.

Xamillion. The day I pay off my student loans is going to be awesome.

I say keep the XJ, I don't like unknown issues, I prefer broken things I KNOW are broken  and like someone said, parts are cheap and plentiful.

I can understand why a flawless diamond is cool to you guys since you're geologists, but I intend to make a ring when the time comes. Not sure whether that'll involve 5 axis CNC or some casting... but either way it'll be an adventure.

That's cool. I found this person who helps you make your own rings, starting with melting a block of metal for the band. I wanted to do that but it was kind of expensive.

I would think that once the xj is paid for it will last a while and not be that much of an issue for a while. Mine had 225K on it and sat in a field for a couple years before I got it. Wheeling often is not something I do with the twins and the fact that the closest place is 1.5 hours one way. To me the Crawl is what I work all year for. I get one great trip to a great destination every year, but right now I'm ok with that. The jeep does not cost me anything when I don't go. LOL! GL on your decision but I would think that trimming down other stuff would be essayer and more satisfying.

In your shoes I would keep the XJ and get it paid off.

I financed my 1996 ZJ, we paid cash for the 1985 XJ, the 1990 XJ, the 2004 WJ, and the 2001 XJ. We got to the point where we just needed to pay off the ZJ and have a garage full of free and clears.

Not having car payments is MUCH better than the alternative. All of a sudden we had an extra $280 a month to spend on other things...and there are plenty of them...like paying down the house. Not having a car payment helped us pay off a 30 year house note in just under 5.

My parents are trying to get out of debt going into retirement in 2012, yet they keep buying new cars. I can't accept their justification that the constant trading is helping them. I'll keep my Jeeps until they fall apart, which isn't terribly likely anytime soon and buy something different, if, and only if, I come across a sum of money to buy it outright.

I will say from personal experience that having an older car that is payed off and needs nickle and diming is much less of a burden than a newer car with a payment.

Consider this...even if you have to pay $1500 a year for repairs on the Jeep...A/C evaperator one year, tires and exhaust the next, rear main the next...you are still better off. To equal $1500 a year in saved maintenance fees by owning a newer car your payments would need to be $125 a month.

Good luck on your decision, man!

Ditto on that car payment. Wifes car is payed off and all I do now is upkeep maintenance. I told the wife I didnt want a new truck so she basically said get what you want for you jeep to keep it going. I have 223000 on the od so a new engine is in the future, hopefully with another 223000+ to go. 95 subies are $1800 to $7000 from what I seen.

This morning on my way to work, I think I figured it out. I think I just don't like my Jeep. I think I need a stock(ish) Jeep.

When I got this Jeep, our household income was much more than it is now. I don't have a lot of $ to throw at this thing and it seems like something always needs to be fixed and I'm kind of tired of fixing it. Seems like a lot of effort for little-to-no payoff.

SO you decided to sell it and buy a smaller newer one?

I haven't decided anything yet, but I think it might be the best option. Instead of owning a jacked-up Jeep that gets horrendous gas mileage and constantly needs something fixed, i should get a stock(ish) Jeep that only gets terrible gas mileage and doesn't need constant attention.

It seems like the best way to save $ and still have a Jeep.

i wish i had money....i need a new project.
