I always thought this was really dangerous, or am I an idiot?

If theres no other choice, do it CAREFULLY and with COMMON SENSE.(IE. No severe side pulls, NO JERKING OR HEAVING, ect) However, do use a shackle as a rule, as what Old Man pointed out about loads is correct. Im a graduated engininner as well, and have been the foreman of a local farm herebouts for more than four years. (Im retired now) Ive also seen and had to extract bent pins, seen frayed then snapped straps and chains flinging around like giant whips, and chains that had collapsed and bent links, and ALSO recievers with elongated holes. All from hooking onto the reciever pin. :laugh3: Im not saying dont do it, Im just pointing out that with just the pin you have a 50/50 situation. I believe that a nice shackle and CAUTION ramps it up to at least 70/30.

and i am with old man on this one

some people need to learn respect for age, experience and education
Old man will probebly be the first to tell you he don't know everything, but he knows what he has seen and heard and it's a lot more than some of us kids.

The bottom line is that its what you learn after you know it all that counts. The day you quit learning is a sad day.

Another one liner with way too much truth. Common sense is uncommon.

We all tend to give people the benefit of the doubt about using common sense. The problem in the world today is that we are communicating by a very few type written sentences to people we have never met or really know. Liability is word that comes up way too often. When it comes to safety and the chance of someone getting hurt, I tend to be VERY conservative. Do I take chances in my own life. You bet, but I do it taking personal responsibility for the results.
