Hunters/archers

The past 2 years I have seen a very nice 10 pointer in the same field when harvesting. This year I have him patterened pretty well, so I am hoping that he hangs in the general vincinity come gun season. There is no place to hang a stand along the travel area that will lend itself to bow hunting, so I am gonna try and gun him down...

Last buck that was on my camera was a small 4 point Sept 4th. Not a sign of a buck since. I also border 2500 acres of state land and across the road is another 4500 acre of county wildland. I have been watching and have seen wolves since then. The year round neighbor about 1 1/2 miles from me also had a mountain lion on game camera. We do not even have doe permits for my area. Although all small game season I've been killing coyote's. up to 17 this year. That's lower than my first year living out here

guys, its awn....
went out friday. nothin
saturday mornin nothin
saturday night, nothin.

now, it got damn cold where i hunt in van buren county michigan.....

29 or 30. hard frost. ice in the creek.
went out in the woods and started bumping deer left and right, couldn't see shit, moonless, and i go by feel, i don't run flashlights. got snorted at at about 20 yards, almost ruined my scent lok. i got snorted at again by another buck halfway up my ladder.

grunted at that buck at the top, he came in at the stand, still too dark to see, got to the base and started stamping.

I sat quiet for an hour-fifteen before it was light enough to see.

deer all around, and then nothing.

when light came, some turkeys went crazy and flew down within 50 yards, figured i'd fill my turkey tag. while i was picking out which one to nail, anout six does and yearlings came piling in around my stand, totally took me by surprise. They were being chased. My stand is way high, like 25 feet, and none of these buggers could smell me.

buck came in chased them away, then started winding, and then into browsing. I let an arrow fly, but admitedly i was a fuzz high and behind. arrow passed through, he took off.

i let 30 minutes pass, and walked back to the cabin, lit a fire, packed some things, rearraged the truck for carcass transport, texted my buddies to help, and we got there about 2 hours after the shot.

drizzle started, and the wind picked up, i started getting nervous. We found good blood trail 20 yards from the arrow, and followed it. good blood. then we got up on the little ridge and the leaves were blowing across, totally jacked up the blood trail. we picked it up in some spots and tried to follow. we wasted an entire hour trying to pick up the next section.

my heart sank, we lost the damn trail. four guys, three and a half hours of looking in the obvious spots down low, creek bottom, oak swamp, fawkin everywhere.

We had to leave him in the woods.

dammit.

next weekend though, there's a ten pointer in the area. pre rut is awn, it came on like a switch on sunday morning.

rut will come hard just like predictions said they would.

its awn.

Tell me about it. I almost hit a 10 pointer this AM. His neck was puffed way out and the doe he was chasing was tail up the whole time I saw her.

Pheasant and Dove - MAT 16ga SxS
Deer Shotgun - Mossberg 500
Deer ML - NEF Pardner inline .50, .385gn Minnie's over 85gn of Pyrodex P, and a 206 primer adapter.
Deer Rifle - depends on mood... split between the Savage 10fp with either the .308 or 6.5x55 Swede screwed into the action, Marlin 336 30-30, M14S, K98K, PSL, or the SKS... been toying with the idea of using my M1 Carbine, as most shots are >25yrds.
Also carry my 1911a1 with a 6" barrel for the final shot if needed.
Squirrels and bunnies - Used to be the Kimber 82G, but lately I have been using the USMC 40x with a 20x SuperSniper on top :D

Here's a shot from my deer stand last year, got my widdle 8pt with the SKS.

calling for a 80% chance of rain on wednesday and temp changes..it is getting ready to get serious up in here. I have a Knight and Hale pro staffer hunting on our farms and the owner of Adrenaline Outdoors as well....I am getting some nice free goodies out of this deal again. They gave me and my father-in-law free bows a few years back, a double bull ground blind, full camos, new Muck boots, calls, turkey decoys..and the list goes on and on. I really should get back into hunting now that I have all this new stuff to use. :D

finally its on here...hunting was good this week. just waiting for the big migration to hit. its usually about the first week of december

I have all but given up Jeeping since I bought a bow 2 years ago. I bought it to extend my hunting season (and have killed 3 deer in the last 2 years) but target archery is where its at. I shoot 3D almost every weekend and indoor spots is fun after I fill in my tags. Can't wait for 3D season to start again in late January.

Anyone have a pic of what a buck looks like in the woods? I even put out doe in heat scents along with feed and camera has yet to capture one since September 14th. Debating getting a license.

So, where's the pics of your guys hanging venison?
im with kman, im better at slaying school papers. ill be hunting this weekend a bit though.
