How to tell if it's a stroker

I am looking at a 90 xj that the owner/ seller says has a 4.5 stroker motor. Is there any way to verify this in a short period of time without tearing apart his Jeep.

Receipts or a verbal confirmation from whoever did the work ?

No reciepts and the build is hear say by the owner.

The only other thing I can think of is to dyno it, if it dynos at at like 230+hp it is probably a stroker, if it dynos at 190-200hp probably not.
Seems like a lot of hassle to me. Every hot rod builder I know keeps a log and receipts of their rides, both for insurance and reference purposes. It's nice to know the part numbers of a set of bearings you used in that custom built rear axle when it comes to replacement or whose motor mounts you used when one breaks.

wouldn't a compression check also work.doesn't the stroker have a higher compression then stock.

Pump it. Find someone at a Drag strip or Stock Car track that has a displacement pump.
It should read 0.75L per cylinder stock is 0.66L.

Can't you just pop out a spark plug and measure the depth to the piston @ BDC? Compare it to a stock one. A stroker has a longer stroke so won't it be farther down in the bore? Just my .02.

compression should give you a good idea. measuring it would work..the whole idea of a stroker is shorter connecting rods, longer crank throw = longer stroke so yeah BDC would be a longer measaurement. and take 'er for a spin. if you've ever driven a stocker, this thing should strain your neck muscles a little more i'd hope. don't think i'd want to buy a stroker unless they guy had documented it pretty well and/or had a pro do it, in which case it should be documented at least what kit or parts they used.

Langer has a good idea...the p&g test....you pull one set of rocker arms and test the swept volume...I've had to go thru that before at the races :laugh3: another clue (unless he had the crank snout shortened) will be a spacer between the harmonic balancer and the retention bolt to make up for the 10mm longer crank snout on a 4.2 crank. Further...most likely the injectors will be changed to 24#ers and possibly an adjustable map sensor....strokers tend to run lean with the stock stuff especially at low altitude.
