How to tell if AC is converted to R134 or not?

that looks like some "off the wall" brand of refrigerant that I don't think should be in a mobile AC system-- the "this product is flammable" label makes me a little nervous. The link shows it as a "replacement for R134a and R12," but I don't think any of the major AC parts companies would warranty something that failed after the use of it, and I don't want something that's flammable enough to need a specific warning on the label used where an accident could cause it to rapidly evacuate around potentially hot/sparking equipment.

The fitting still look like factory R12 fittings-- I'd have it evacuated and either retrofit with R134a, or recharge with R12.

Based on the info you just gave me, that's what I think I will do. I've found lots of stupid little things on this Jeep that the previous owner's mechanic did that just reek of "taking shortcuts" or doing things cheaply.

You have the standard R-12 services valves. Like the others have said, it appears you have some kind of R-12 "substitute".

I would also recommend you convert.

A few extra things to consider. Since the stems come off the sides of the service valves, you'll need a 90 deg adapter for the high side port (the one on the left). There's just not enough room to get the hose on it. You should be OK on the low side (right side) but a 90 there too won't hurt.

Make sure you replace the drier too.
