How much lift do I need for 31's on stock rims?

Well I just got home and found a 3" lift for $378.00. It's a skyjacker. I also found 31/10.5 and rims for $638.00. The only thing I have to find out is if the rims I'm thinking about buying are stock, if so then I'll keep what I have and just buy a spare. My friend and I are going to install it in his garage (he has way more tools than I do). I'm thinkin about buying Rancho 5000 for it but I really don’t have a clue what length I need. Any suggestions? I went to the website mentioned before but I'm a nubbie so it really didn’t make much sense.
Thanks for any help.

Howey, I'm guessing from your last post that you have time to build it up slowly? If so, consider cobbling together your own lift from other parts. Front end: ZJ V8 coils will give your front end a lift that you can level out to 3" with coil spacers. You can bend your front brake lines to get a couple of more inches of length. You probably don't need new control arms at 3" and under. Get swaybar disconnects for the front end. You can get bar pin eliminators front and rear to get more shock options.
Rear End: Take off your rear antisway bar. Make your own lifted leaf pack by adding in more leaves from XJ or MJ packs, or any 2.5" wide leaf spring packs. Mix and match until you get the lift you need.
This option will be considerably cheaper than purchasing a lift kit and will also provide you with knowhow as you learn to build up your jeep. You can search this site for building leaf packs, zj coils, etc, etc to get more ideas. Rock Lizard fabrications has a good page on building a leaf pack here. Research this a bit more, there are lots of cheap homebrew options out there that will give you a well-functioning lift and teach you lots about your jeep in the process. Just my $0.02.
Good luck with it,
Beej.

If you really want to buy a lift and money is tight go with a Rough Country they are about the cheapest on the market I just got mine today 3" lift with shocks for $200 .I got them from www.jcwtruck.com you can do a 90 day no payment no interest plus a 15% discount or free shipping check it out

From what I hear, Skyhacker lifts for Cherokees aren't all that great. I know they run a lot of lifts for full size trucks but for midsize I'd shy away. I saw a guy with a XJ and Skyhackers 8" lift with the subframe job and it didn't flex worth shism.

im running 31" m/t's on my '89 stock. i had to do some trimming cause my leafs are shot, but the front has no problems atall, even offroad it flexes all that it did with the 30's i was running. just thought id toss that out there.

Thanks for all the help but I think I'm going to go with this kit. I did some looking and I could piece one together it would actually cost about the same because of my location. Stuff is not cheep in alaska and some stuff is kinda hard to find. So it looks like I'll go with the zj shocks in the back thanks for the info.

I'm new to this sort of thing so please forgive my stupidity. I have a 99 Cherokee and would like to put 31's on it. I heard that I would need about 3" lift, is that about right? Any help in this matter would be great. Also I live in Alaska and it's crazy hard & expensive to have things shiped up here. Thanks

no need for lift - just big sawzall blades

i think cheepxj has an MJ on 33" tires with no lift and an XJ on 36" tires with 3" lift
Lor5 has an XJ with a similar setup...

if you eant it to look nice - id say 3" is about perfect

I've got an OME 2" lift that I am going to put on in the spring, and have been wondering the same thing. I was originally thinking 30's, but have been researching tires and a bump up to 31's seems to give a few more choices (TRXUS's come to mind). I figure I'll put the OME kit on and add some bump stops as mine are gone, then do any necessary cutting. I have a friend who is running Pro Comp 32" swampers on a 3" Skyjacker lift and some trimming. It looks pretty good. I also have have a BB kit with llift shackles, poly spacers, track bar for an additional 2", but want to avoid going too high.

Howey. Before you give up on finding used pieces to put something together, try Dean's Auto Salvage and Northwest Auto Parts. Both are in Anchorage and both have plenty of Cherokee and other truck parts. Leaf spring packs for $60 etc....

Beeje thanks for the info I will have to look into it some more. If nothing else I might be able to get some other parts if something else goes wrong. Again thanks. Be the way how did you locate those sites? I tied google but must have typed something wrong.

I looked through car-parts.com to find them. I searched for xj leaf springs in alaska and ended up with those two sites being major contributors to the list. They seem to carry lots more than just jeeps. By the way, when thinking about replacement leafs for your leaf packs, just about any 2.5" wide leaf will do, including older Jeeps, chevy trucks, dakotas and many others to choose from. Just a thought.....
