How many inchs can I lift my xj till I need to worry about the driveshaft falling out

You must be a fan of your flares. I'm not so I'm at 3" with 32's! I would definitely just go ahead and do a slip yoke eliminator and take care of that issue all together.

Definitely have to do shocks and track bar! If your DD 'ing your rig I'd do a Sye and front DS. But I dd'ed all of mine without a Sye.

I had both an 89 & 94 with 4.5" & 32's I never had an issue with dropping the driveline. I might have been lucky though. My 93 is 6.5 and I did install a SYE. I dont worry about it now.

In my 89 I'm at 4.5" and 32s with stock shafts and no issues here, but I do have a case drop.

Ya I figured I am looking I found everything thinking I can do this all for about $930 talking sye new DS new shocks new track bar and spacers and shackles its a DD my other option is not going any bigger I've got a 3 inch lift running 32's which seems to do alright I only got stuck once and it was me bottoming out in a rutt I was off all four tires lol so thats what made me think of maybe going a little bit bigger

I used a driveshaft from the front of an XJ for my rear shaft with the SYE. It's a pretty inexpensive way to get one long enough back there. Much cheaper than a new driveshaft.

I ran a SYE w/ stock front shaft out back on @ 8" of lift and never dropped a shaft, except maybe that one time and Wheeler needed the money.

95 and down tend to respond better to being lifted than the 96+

They changed the tcase in those years (along with the change from OBD I to OBD II) and the newer style had the internal rear seal vs the external rear seal. While it doesn't appear this would make much of a difference, there are more complaints on vibes with the newer style.

That said I ran a stock shaft that was lengthened an inch on my 95 up to about 6 inches of lift and a stock lengthened shaft on my 96 at 4.5 inches, only went to an sye on the 96 because I got a great deal on a tcase with one installed.

One the sye, I ran a front shaft in the rear, but had to also have it lengthened an inch.

mac 'one inche makes the difference sometimes' gyvr

Instead of paying to lengthen the ds, you could grab the frt d.s. out of a ZJ that had a V8, those are longer than the XJ shaft. That is what I run in back on my 99.
