How and where is everyone mounting their iPods?

Just installed an Alpine iPod receiver with a rear USB cable. I've got an extension cable, I can mount an iPod anywhere, but... in the MT 97+ interior, where is a good place for it? Right now I've got the cable running behind the dash and into the glove box. If anyone has any clever ways of mounting their iPods, let's hear it! Post pics! :guitar:

This is what I did off my older style dash. I just plug either my thumb drive or my Ipod into the usb plug and tuck it down in front of the bench. I was going to run a Ipod specific cable to the glove box but it turns out that my pioneer headunit will control the thing through the USB sync cable.

I dont have any pics but I ran mine up under the center console to the ash tray. just cut a hole in the bottom and pulled some cord through. Keep it piled in there when the ipod isnt hooked up and just open it and plug it in when it is. Not the fanciest but it works.

Wow, that IS cool. I'll have to check clearance with my shifter, but I could make the unused switch port next to my rear wiper and defroster switches a USB port like you've done. (I'm guessing it's where a factory foglight switch would go? The wiring is right behind it). That'd be cool for a thumb drive. I also really like the ashtray idea.

Good responses all, thanks for the info and pics. Keep em coming.

I just use a drill bit that was the same width as the USB port, drilled two holes then used an Xacto knife to trim the figure eight square. Got it just snug enough for the plug to fit, then roughed up the back of the plastic and put a bead of Gorilla glue around the plug like caulk.

I keep meaning to drill a small hole below it so I can snake the USB port cover into it and have a slick little cover for it too.

What model alpine? I just got a newish (new within last 2-3 years) one, and you can cycle the ipod using the faceplate controls. I leave my ipod in my glove box and leave it alone.

Thats what I did too, I have a 97+ console in my 94.

what model alpine do you have?

mine (a bit older than yours) has the ipod interface but doesnt have the constant charging feature. my cord was ran behind the dash, inside the center council, and through the whole where the latch used to be. i was meaning to upgrade the deck to one with constant charging and simply lock the ipod in the glove box... but before i could get around to that it got stolen.

now ive got a cool cord that everyone asks what its for. :gonnablow

Hey, that is a darn cool setup. How do you have the ipod itself mounted in that shot? Some kind of clamp? Modified from...? I can't imagine it would just stay that way by itself...

Its just resting that way in the shot, it tends to fall down into the slot as I drive.

I've been thinking of buying one of those cupholder mounted ipod holders off ebay and trimming it to fit in there.

One of these: http://cgi.ebay.com/BELKIN-TuneDok-...er_MP3_Player_Accessories&hash=item19b3ff5663

My ipod is mounted on the rack at the electronics store. I prefer better sound quality and interface of other media player. I do not have usb function on my head unit, altho it has better output than any that do. Aside from that Mine has an aux input (audio rca, red/white) that I have connected to a RCA to 3.5mm adapter cable. I run it under my center console to about where the e-brake is.

iPod is plenty good sound quality - if you use the encoder and go from a CD to lossless the output has very little sound quality loss. The problem today is the quality and health of MP3's - especially those floating around in torrents. Unless you are a true audio nut - the stereo out of the ipod should suffice in any car.

I have the tune FLex by griffin

modified slightly becuase the extension is pretty long -

I installed a Kenwood receiver with iPod control into my son's 96 XJ and I just ran the USB through the center console cover then into the center console. Its out of site and out of mind.

I do it the same way. I mounted my iPod interface under the center console and ran the cable through the hole where the clip would be. Of course my brother lost my iPod so I gotta buy a new one! :smsoap:

You have that copper case Alpine right? if the input wire is removable you can get one with a 3.5mm end on it so you aren't stepping through am adapter if you are that worried about sound quality.

I've compared the same stuff on ipod's to what is on my computer/mp3 cd/and music players. The SQ is that much better. It doesn't convert it to crap. Even the apple "lossless" crap nowhere compares to FLAC or even 320k mp3s. And I do not need lame 3rd party software to copy music on to my media players.

Why not leave the Ipod in the glove box?????? It is not like you control anything from it anyway when plugged to the Alpine! I have the Alpine too and just leave the Ipod in the glove box...........
