anyone who made their own front or rear bumper do you have drawings (or at least instructions/explanations) on how you did it and what was involved?

thanks guys

I got a Piece of 2" x 6" rectangular tube steel.
I believe it was 63" long, but you can make it any length you want.

I got 2 pieces of 1/4" plate steel that were 5" by 18"

clamped the plates to the frame so they were flush with the front rails.
Marked and drilled out the holes for the steering box.
Drilled more holes.
Insertend $30 worth of Grade 8 bolts and lightly tightened them.

Had my buddy hold the 2x6 in place while I tac welded it.

took it off, Perm welded the rails on.

Welded end caps, ground them smooth.

drilled a 1/4" whole on the back of the bumper

Put a steel quick disco air connector over the hole and welded it down

sprayed the whole thing with spray on bedliner and let it dry.

Put it back on the truck and cranked down all the bolts to 600ft/lbs

I now have a 3 gallon air tank, and I can run over trees if I want to.

Oh, and it's not pretty either. But people get the hell out of my way.

By time you add up the hours of research, getting materials, and the hours to piece it together...you could easily buy a good bumper from one of our sponsors. Our sponsors have years of experience and have some nice solid strong bumpers. WHat do you think your project is going to look like?

Thanks guys,

Bob, my time is free, and research is learning. So is building the bumpers. If i buy new bumpers theres really no pride in it, just "ooo look what i bought", whereas building them yields "look what i built"

if i build the bumpers they wont be as "pretty" as the manufactured ones to most people, but they will look nice to me and ill even crack a grin because i knew i built them

im not poor and im not rich, i just tyr to use common sense. Those manufactured bumpers are really expensive. I am sure that ARB is a good bumper, but the price makes me laugh endlessly

Your employer must love you then if you work for free. And, I think I speak for most here, and say.. my time is worth money

And there are plenty of companies that make bumpers, not just ARB. Take a look at www.JCROffroad.com

benulis55, i like the way you think...You can learn alot by making the bumpers yourself..I myself, find it is easy to buy them an bolt them on...These guys need to make a living too...If you have the time and tools to do it, i say go for it...
Good luck

X2 on the JCR bumpers, they fit great..

check out Iron Scorpion. they send you the metal needed for their bumpers and you weld them up. while it may not be entirely DIY, its a great option for those of us who weld but dont have a plasma or cutting torch. and you get the pride of saying you built it yourself

My time is spare time is just that, and messing with the Jeep is fun. I would have to go in to work, put up with the moron that keeps the chair warm in the supervisors office, and then pay taxes on my wages to fund store bought parts. The time I spent building a bumper was therapeutic, cheaper than the equivalent time spent in a bar, and worth the effort.

I think my bumper project turned out pretty well and the materials cost me $48. I built the rock rails too.

all these comments are great, that's what forums are for.

All I can suggest now is to take a good look
at our sponsors bumpers and rock rails.
They make some very good products and have tie-ins so you
don't rip your bumper off the first time you use your winch.

some things you can't take a gamble on.
These sponsors have years of experience and research with off roaders finding what works and what doesn't.

glad your doing your research.
