Home-made Transfercase??

I was reading a 4x4 mag today and i saw in a picture that someone had made their own single speed transfer case with a few large sprockets and chains. This is new to me but has anyone tried to make their own transfer case?

A local friend made one for a sand comp rig about 35 years ago. It's not a new concept, I think the swamp rigs do it that way, and so do monster trucks. Don't know why you'd want to in an XJ, but it certainly is possible.

It looked like a good idea to me. mines in pretty bad shape and a good one is $1200. The editor said you can get perfect drivetrain angles and make some high gearing ratios.and if its simple, its gotta be strong.

There is a Sami that comes to the mudhole all the time that has a home built T/C made from the odd metal scap, some sprockets and pillow-block bearings..works good for mud, with 38's he just crawls along...won't work for anything else though...takes up way too much room. hangs low.

I have an aluminum one that we had made for our EC4WDA jeep. We had it made for our jeep because of wieght and because we can change the gearing in it in about 1 hour, that maximises our jeeps competativeness,
