High Park Fire

They think it probably was lightning

Since last night, it went from 30 square miles to 56 square miles.

If not lightening, that is right in the vicinity of the CSU mountain campus, plus there are alot of primitive campgrounds in the area, so human causes seem fairly likely. If it gets across the poudre, they're going to have real problems, since the population density kicks up pretty good on the north side...

The fire was started by the massive lightning storm friday night. At 7am Saturday morning the fire was burning massively, and the smoke could be seen MILES away.

I live just west of campus, and last night you could barely see half a mile because the smoke had made it so hazy.

Ash is falling, hell i'm sitting at work right now and I smell like campfire...the whole town of Fort Collins as well as other towns in the vicinity do as well. The inside of my Jeep had a small ash layer since I accidently left the windows open on it Saturday night.

Due to the ash, Fort Collins and other towns in the immediate area are under some sort of health watch/concern due to all the smoke in the air.

My roomate's girfriend got evacuated from her house yesterday, currently staying at our place.

This fire is bad...very very bad. It's claimed many a house already and doesn't look like it will/can be stopped anytime soon.

Apparently from what i've heard, this was the fire they were hoping wouldn't happen but has. All the beetle-killed pine trees were just matchsticks waiting to light.

It has jumped the Poudre, which they were REALLY hoping it wouldn't be able to do. If it keeps going I wouldn't be suprised to see visible flames in the foothills right next to Fort Collins :(

Yeah, I hope they can get it under wraps today now that winds have died down. That said, if they call up the Guard I hope my unit is one of the ones called. These sort of State Relief missions is exactly what I feel the Guard's Primary Mission should be, especially as the "War" is winding down to a close.

Werd to your primary mission, Dutch, I agree totally. I hope they get this monster contained before it toasts Mishiwaka -- that place rocks.

Bummer, sounds like the Hayman fire. At it's worse, that morning it seemed like the sun never came up.

wicked photo, Sam...

A few of my friends up there had to evacuate. Said they got a call that they were on watch to evac and flames were at a distance. 10 minutes later they were being rushed out and flames were super close - almost scary. Hope it gets under wraps really fast. This state doesnt need any more craziness. If any of you up there need a hand, give a ring.

Yikes, yeah Grant does have a house and property up there....... given his busy racing schedules..... I wonder if he's even home.....
