to put this thing up on 4 jack stands on the axle tubes and let it run in gear to try and locate some of these noises?
sounds a little unsafe to me but I can't think of another way :roflmao:

I've done that before - but I put the jack stands under the frame - not the axles.
I suppose it would work - just make sure you have your life insurance and will in order first! :D

Oh, and put a video recorder on a tripod and let it run - just in case...
Also - give your wife your naxja log-in password - just so she can give us an update - just in case.... :D

Make sure it is solid..............that is how I have burned in new gears before. You have to put it under axle or you will not get the Jeep up high enough to let the drive train run and inspect it......FYI........just remember though with the drivetrain in the air it will make all kinds of noise..............When I have done this it sounds like things are rattling and making noise all over the place, so you might not be able to truly diagnose things properly like that.

Make sure you are in the vehicle or somebody in the vehicle at all times to put on the brakes or take it out of gear when needed.

Put the jack stands under the axles when running the drive train. Torque can cause the springs to warp or droop and the tires to expand. You don't want a tire to tough the ground. At the track, NHRA requires jack stands under drive axles if the car is off the ground, when testing the drive train. Also, don't use the cheep old tube inside of tube type jack stands. They don't like torque and I've seen them split apart.

well screw it then, if it's not going to do me any good I'm not going to risk life and limb, lol.

Well in that case I am not going to tell you the next part :spin1:

....................Okay I a might as well tell you in case you change you mind. :lecture:

Personal experience use your lower gears, 1st or 2nd, if you go to 3rd, 4th or put it straight into drive they will spin very fast, all that weight of the tires spinning and might wobble the Jeep around and risk falling off stands.

Second and this is for AUTOMATICS, DO NOT PUT IT STRAIGHT INTO PARK..............put it in neutral and stop the wheels first, then put it in PARK...........I made the mistake of doing this and about destroyed my tranny...........

Jeezus Philip, man-up! :D

Put the stands under the axles - not the body. Axles left hanging while the drivetrain is spinning will move, wobble, vibrate, etc, and could cause the body to slip off a stand. Most jack stands have a nice "C" shaped notch that cradles the axle tubes and will hold it just fine.

I've done this lots of times and hell, the professional NHRA drag racers do this same thing in the pits with top fuel/top alcohol dragsters and give those huge slicks a pretty healthy spin when test firing their engines after the rebuilds.

Shup and get it done goober.

If you do it in the garage:
1. Make sure you back in.
2. Let your neighbors use your driveway.
3. Ask someone to hold your beer.

Can I have your XJ for parts if sumthin' happens. Troy already has enough garage art.

gotta do garage, driveway too steep. Whose house do I hit, my own or my neighbors? I think it won't matter since I'll be dead or seriously injured anyway.

I once moved my Red 88 XJ from my second garage slot to my third using two floor jacks. No tires installed. We were getting dumped with snow and I had to get the wife's car back in the garage. Doesn't sound like much of a feat? I have a roof support pilar that runs floor to ceiling. It's about C pilar deep on an XJ, and I couldn't open the garage doors.

One floor jack was a decent Costco one with about a 4" tray. The other was a cheapo from Sears; the one that you have to use the bar to turn the release...to drop it down. It has about a 2" tray on it. One jack in the front the other in the back. Rotors never touched the ground.

Did it all alone...no one was even home to call 911.

LOL! Garage art huh? :D Pretty much.....

What I am I? .....mince meat over here? :(

Everything I mentioned in my fourth post everybody repeats? .........I feel unloved...........:bawl:

...........I think Phillip has it down he needs to put the axles on the jack stands.......................
