Help, Please. Fuel / Gas Gauge Not Reading Correctly

Ran out of gas on the freeway today.
Meter read 1/8 full... light wasn't on.
Had to go buy a Gas can and fuel. Started up after I added 2 gallons.
2 Gallons of fuel brought the meter up to a 1/4 of a tank.

Please, what can I do to fix this. First time this has happened.

The gauge of my trail rig only intermittantly works, so I have figured the mpg I usually get and use that as my judge....Don't let it get so low.

fill it up to absolutely full, open the cluster up and move it down to the full mark if it goes past it.
