If that is done what header would I use? The reason I ask is the headers I was looking at are for 91 up to 96 ( I think). Would I use the header to match the head or is there different sensors on the 89?
You'll also need to adapt the intake manifold to match the ports on the new head.
Edit: Wow. Was searching sites to find the best price on the manifold work and found Accurate Power is no longer. Any one else hear about this? I believe Clifford will modify your manifold for 100 bucks or so. I don't know how involved it is, but you could do it yourself also. :dunno:
I swapped on a '95 head onto a '03 block. Not the same, but it went into an '88 Comanche. The heads should bolt on. I would use a header from the same year as your head. 91-and up should work. The 91 and up manifold would match the head. It really depends if you want or need to keep the EGR system for emmissions. If you look 8 post down '91 head /99+ intake manifold on a 88 block' he's doing the same thing. I think the cutting out of the EGR area and graphing and welding to the newer manifold is the best way to go. Still, some just block the system off and their engine runs fine. If you get an after market header, then Pace Setter and Clifford has the bung or boss for the EGR system. The Clifford will need to be drilled out to complete the system.

Not smaller, the ports are just slightly lower on the head for an improved air-flow angle. If you use a '91+ manifold it will bolt right up to the head and you could use the larger TB also. You'll have to figure out the steering pump brackets, possibly get that with the manifold. There might also be issues with the injectors/rails you'll have to address. I'd try to get the whole manifold set-up; tb, injector rails, steering pump/brackets as a unit, so you'd have everything you might possibly need.
I would use the header for the '89 for smog reasons, but that might be a moot point after swapping in a '91+ manifold.
Hopefully someone chimes in that knows more about this swap than I do.
