HD fan clutch upgrade...

Thanks...the internet is worse than CB or even Morse slang.....
Ignore the flamers, they have little to do.

Do learn to search since so much of Naxja forum's information is buried in the past and unknown to most. A good portion of Naxja true experts have stopped reading or posting. Google also can find a lot of Jeep stuff.

Here is a good example of someone who was a great contributor, he has a very useful site for beginners and experts alike. Read it and learn as I did many years ago.

Stay cool.

Bimmerjeeper, is that you?

LOL, a cousin perhaps? if it is he moved from NY to Florida, LOL.

At least this guy has been searching, posting in threads already ready, even if some are 3+ years old.
A lot more than can be said for other dillweeds lingering about.

I replaced my fan clutch with a new Hayden clutch
last summer. Afterwards it ran cooler, with a more
steady temp indication at the gauge.

The old clutch wasn't leaking, and it seemed to
still work OK, with slippage when cold and increased
tension when warm.

Either the fan clutches wear out over time, or the
Hayden is designed with less slippage built in...

Last week, my water pump started to leak and my fan clutch had some play so I replaced them both with new OEM parts. Before, my dash was reading 210-225 and higher. Now It reads 180 to 190. I did not change the thermostat out to a 180 model. Is it possible that there is a 180 in there from the previous owner and the water pump and clutch were so shot that it was running that hot? I broke something loose in the cooling system and the thermostat is holding open? Or is my sending unit shot?????

So.... Really...

You do not want the HD fan clutch from a ZJ. You want the Standard Duty clutch as the HD version will not fit. The ZJ SD clutch couples at a much higher percentage than our clutch does. The exact numbers are floating around here somewhere... It is a significant coupling increase.

I ran this setup for a bit and it moves a ton of air. There is a down side though. Your Heep will sound like a CJ-2a. With the movement of the air, comes fan noise. As long as you are willing to accept the noise, go for it. The mod will not disappoint.

As to why I removed the mod off my Heep, I went all electric. Fan and water pump. With, I might add mixed results.

Knowing what I do now, I would stick to the ZJ clutch and mechanical pump. Easier and much more reliable.

Yes. I removed the Napa 272310 standard duty ZJ fan clutch because of noise.

We need to make a sticky out of this quote me thinks!

ZJ fan clutch is not needed IMHO. It's a band aid at best. I really wish i had the time and money to take mine out. SO FRIGGIN LOUD and made no difference in temp.
Best thing to do is figure out why you're running hot. If you're not running hot, then there is no need for a ZJ fan clutch.

My cooling system is in fair to good condition however, with temps hovering near 100 everyday and 100% humidity everyday, MY heep WAS running on the warmer side of 210 in the afternoon heat in stop and go traffic and in drive thrus. The 185 thermostat and a flush cured that as now I just barley gets to 210 on the hottest days in the stop and go stuff/drive thru stuff. I would like to improve a little more in the event I have to put a little stress on my moter. That's why I plan on putting the ZJ fan clutch in. The gas mileage and noise arent that big a deal because it's not my daily driver, if so, I would be going a differnt route. Besides, if Jeeps didn't want you to run a 185 stat, they wouldnt have made one available for hot weather or dessert jeeps. The ONLY reason they didn't make a HD can clutch and option is because of gas mileage and emmissions. The pre-cats on alot of the XJs are proof of that.
