HD fan clutch upgrade...

I know the thread is old. Found it on Google. I did a search, my bad for looking before posting.

Anyway, The Hayden Part # 2737 works?

:huh:I'm trying to bring back this old thread. 1996 Cherokee Country. Can somebody please tell me the difference between what NAPA says is a HD clutch #272318, and the 272310 that it seems like most of the people seemed to agree on. What is the shaft speed on my original equipment compared to the 318 and 310 part numbers?

Also, why when I look up the 318 number does it ask me what direction my fan turns IE standard or reverse????

"Standard" refers to rotation direction that is the same as the crankshaft pulley.
The cooling fan pulley on an XJ is driven by the back of the serpentine belt which causes it to rotate "reverse" rotation.

I called NAPA and asked them about a HD fan clutch for 96 cherokee 4.0. They came up with #272318 but they could not specify it was a standard or reverse rotating unit. Will I be good with the 272318???? $32 seems too good to be true for a HD fan clutch??? I'm also having trouble trying to figure out the general consensus of which is more desirable in the XJ #272318 or GC#272310? Who's doing what????

There is NO Rotation spec on the fan clutch. It is irrelevant to buying one. There is also no rotation rate spec on the parts counter computers. Just get a standard duty Grand Cherokee fan clutch for a 4.0 engine.

The Grand Cherokee normal duty fan clutch can be used as a heavy duty fan clutch for the XJ.

IIRC the Grand Cherokee has a larger diameter fan and no electric fan on the 4.0 Grand Cherokee.

And it fits most XJ's unless they have bad motor mounts and a 3 row CSF radiator and it is a late model OBD-II XJ, in which case it can hit and damage the the thicker 3 row radiator. The OEM thickness radiators seem to OK, unless the engine mounts and tranny mounts are bad....

Part #?????? Rotation rate???

Thank you for your opinion. Now can you provide a part number and or compare it to the OEM Heavy Duty unit for the 96er??? Or even explain the difference between the two???

I have never heard of an OEM HD unit for the 96 XJ. The only one I know of comes from the Grand Cherokee 4.0, which just happens to fit the XJ 4.0, all the parts stores have a different part number and more than one brand. I use the Hayden brand, got mine at Advanced Auto, and I got the stock standard duty clutch for a Grand Cherokee 4.0 which works as a Heavy clutch on our XJ 4.0s. To my knowledge there never has been an OEM HD clutch for the XJ.

The ZJ, which is a Grand cherokee, does have a standard duty and HD clutch. The standard duty ZJ clutch acts as a heavy duty clutch on XJ 4.0s, the ZJ heavy duty clutch will not fit the XJs, it is too long and hits all the radiators on XJs.

What year ZJ???

Good question, now that I just looked. Any year that had the 4.0 available is my first thought, but not sure now. I am not sure what all years that covers.

93-98 maybe. Just use 1994 in a search.

This is the one I have, Hayden, 1994. I use it my 87 Renix 4.0, Wagoneer XJ.

There is no HD fan for the XJ, only the ZJ.
The Napa 272318 is the one that will fit- got the box in front of me.
It is the standard ZJ clutch. The HD ZJ clutch is too thick to fit, it pushes the fan into the radiator.

Do be prepared for having the fan spin constantly at a higher rate than the stock clutch and the increased noise.
I removed it due to the constant noise (my XJ is a DD) and a slight decrease in mileage when driven at freeway speeds.
It also greatly increased the time needed to come to operating temperature in the winter and lowered the heater's efficiency.
IMO, if the engine and cooling system are in good shape, there is no need for the ZJ clutch. My XJ's problem was a old radiator, cured by installing new one.
One thing for sure, your engine should run cooler with the 272318.
