Harold of the Rocks

so basically im F**Ked. I called national drive train and they said that dana doesent even make the gears i need. so I guess Im going to have to go with G2 and wait a thousand years for the gears to come.

im so pissed. It looks like buying this locker was a mistake

Can you return the locker? Did you buy it from a vendor?

If not, maybe someone else can help out. I wonder if someone can turn down the ring gear or something?

I bought it from CTeunuch, in our forsale forum. so unless he wants to take it back im stuck with it.

maybe someone can turn it down. Ill have to look into that. Ill have to find a machine shop near me and ask.

Im having a hell of a time finding 456 gears for the 60! Not many places carry the thin cut ring gears for the 456 and up carrier.

Im so pissed. I thought I had found some from G2 for a pretty good price but they are on back order and they have no idea when they will have more.

do you guys know of anywhere that sells what i need?

I tried:
randys ring and pinion
just diffs
ring and pinion.com
rustys
4wheel parts
and a couple more that I cant remember.
I even tried to get some quotes from pirate bet its been almost a week and none of the vendors have gotten back to me.

have you tried East Coast Gear Supply or Extreme Axle Sales?

you are also aware that you need to convert that locker to 35 spline correct?

I was not aware of that. shit I guess I didnt do my home work. I guess ill look into what it would take to do that, or ill just resell it and hope I can get most of my money back.

edit: i did some quick googleing and didnt find anything on how to convert it. and I have enough on my plate already with this swap I dont want to make it any harder on my self. so Im just going to sell it. I guess im just going to go open front for now.

No lunchbox or anything up front????:nono: At least weld the spiders up, ive got a mini spool in the front of mine and the turning radius sucks, but i live with it.

Ok so heres a little update on progress.

I ordered my gears.

I tried to pull my carrier. now i had heard of people threading a rag between the ring and pinion. But I thought i was too cool for that so Id try something else.

so i hooked a chain to the carrier and to my winch and kicked the axle off the jack stands

It didnt work. so i decided just to leave it in untill I bring it to be regeared.

so I started removing the rust from my knuckles. got one done, and put one of my high steer arms on to see what it will look like.

any reason you guys dont reuse the stock studs in the driverside knuckle? are they not strong or is it just a rust issue?

Schools almost over so in therory I should start making more progress on this. unless work picks up which it could currently most of my company is working 15hrs a day 6 days aweek. so I could end up like them once school ends. the money would be nice, but no 60 time sucks

The rag trick is easy, 60% of the time it works every time.
Just fleed a little into the ring & pinion and turn the pinion, keep feeding larger amount and turn the pinion (sometimes a pipe wrench is needed for the harder ones) the carrier will works its way up and out.

Gear it yourself. It's not bad. Really, it isn't. Definitely not one of those jobs worth paying for if you can take your time as well as add and subtract small numbers.

Stock Ford knuckles? Take a few minutes and weld some gussets on there.
The stock studs on mine were toast, I tossed 'em.

Do people destroy Ford knuckles with no assist load on the high steer arm?

If not, I wouldn't worry about the knuckles.
I doubt it, it worked for Ford for years.
Still, if he has it torn down to that point why not take the hour or two and just do it? It's going to cost like $2 in scrap steel and $0.50 in welding wire/gas.

Cast Steel IIRC?

I forget the process, but basically cook them in the oven to get them to a certain temperature, burn everything in, then cover them in sand, welding blankets, or whatever to get them to cool down evenly.

Ok Ive heard of people using a BBQ. Ross did his right? In his home oven IIRC. Im not doing that. I guess Ill have to look at his thread.

and as far as gearing it my self I could, but my mechanic will do it for basically free as long as I dont tell him I need it asap. Id like the piece of mind that its done correctly.

you guys mean gussets like this?

Im not going to cut parts of the knuckle off though. So im basically just bracing the top.

Also I found this gem through Ross's thread. I might try to do this. Or something kinda like it just not as good :)

You don't need to go all out and start hacking it apart, but a few braces from the high steer area to the spindle isn't a bad idea.

ok cool. or hot I should say. HAHAHA

how hot did you cook it? and I heard it smells? if so my mother would kill me so Ill have to find another way. and how long do I have before I should stop welding and maybe cook it again if im not done?

and I guess this means im going to have to break down and buy a bottle and gas for my mig.

thanks for all the help guys I would be lost with out you. or worse yet I would get it done, get way out into the woods and my junk would fall apart.
