GRINDING NOISE FROM HELL.....

I HAVE A REALLY BAD GRINDING NOISE COMING FROM THE REAR. WHEN EVER THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION IT GRINDS AND VIBRATES THE BACK END A BIT. WE THOUGHT IT WAS U JOINTS BUT IT IS NOT, IT SOUNDS LIKE ITS COMING FROM THE REAR DRIVERSIDE DRUM BRAKE.... WHAT COULD IT BE??

well if it sounds like the brakes...........maybe you should pull the drum off and ckeck the brakes.

we have pulled off the drum and its fine. everything is ok in there

Put it back together and take it for a drive. Find big empty parking lot.

1. Drive about 20mph straight, Hear noise? Y or N

2. Drive about 20mph, make large arc turn to the right. Noise louder? Y or N

3. Drive about 20mph, make large arc turn to the left. Noise louder? Y or N

If the noise is loudest in scenario #1, i would look in the diff, IF you are sure the U-joints are good.

If noise is loudest in scenario #2, I would check the left wheel bearing.

If noise is loudest in scenario #3, I would check the right wheel bearing.

My advice will work better if you have full coverage insurance, but it isn't necessary.

First thing you need is a gallon of gasoline.

Now find a good road flare.

Park vehicle in a large parking lot away from any trees or buildings..

Next, pour the gas all over the inerior and the exterior of vehicle.

Light flare and throw it through an open window and listen for the noise again.

Any oil in your dif?

If so try Cheese Wiz in the dif, better viscosity breakdown and if it ends up breaking on you at least it will taste good.

i tryed the fire method but it didnt work out so great.... then the cheese wiz just made it worse. it did taste good thow. no i found the noise it was my driverside axle bearings. they were pennies when i pulled them out.

Hmmm? I always have cheeze wiz in my jeep (part of my first aid kit, under "Food"). Do you really think that would work for gear lube? It is after all mostly oil, and it does taste fantastic.
