Grand Cherokee (ZJ) Gears

I'm looking at a '98 ZJ 5.9 that needs a new front differential. I am thinking if I got it I would just swap axles.

Research shows that all the 5.9 ZJs got 3.73 gears. My question, if anyone knows, how rare or plentiful is the 3.73 gear set in the Laredo and Limiteds?

I wonder if all V8s got them, if the tow packages got them, just the Limiteds?

Bottom line....how hard will it be to find a replacement axle for this Jeep at a junk yard?

And the answer is...

All V8 equipped ZJs from 96 to 98 received the 3.73 gears.

Not sure about the 93-95, but I learned what I needed to learn.

Did anything else come with 3.73's? It would be nice to swap out the lp for a hp while your at it.

Cotton... i believe ALL V8's had 3:73's. My 93 Limited does.

While i agree with you that the HP is a better axle, A HP Dana 30 will not fit in a factory ride height ZJ, Unless it has the Upcountry package.. (not avail on the 5.9)
