Got the lift on

The u-joints seemed nice and tight a couple months ago when I looked them over, but I think I'll just replace them anyways. Surprisingly, no vibes at all with the lift - of course, the rear came up less than 2" from I can tell.
 
The day that we were putting your lift on my u-joints busted on the way down to Tims shop. My would clunk going in to gear and would vib above 50 mph. once the broke i put the extra drive shaft in and it was all fixed.
 
Got my AA transfer case skid and painted it. Very nice piece and really beefy. I might have time to install this weekend so maybe a couple of pics to come. Cabot be beat for the price he was running on eBay.

Still shopping tires and have been reluctant to drop 800+ for them. Falkens and Generals are looking pretty good at the moment.
 
I should have learned my lesson from my last Jeep -- ALWAYS align it after you lift it because sooner or later you will get death wobble. I also learned that the fiance isn't a fan of death wobble :scared:


In a way, the death wobble was a stroke of luck because when I pulled over on the freeway to check and see that the front end wasn't falling off, I noticed that the oil pressure sender was pissing oil out of the connect. Checked the oil and it was about a quart low. I drove it off the freeway at the next exit and oil pressure started to fluctuate, not knowing if the pressure itself was starting to fall or if the sender was just totally crapping out, I parked the Jeep on a side street and had to go get a new sender and replace it before driving home. All seems well now except for the big oily mess on the underside of the Jeep. I did a quick tape measure alignment and took the toe-in from 5/8" back down to 1/16" of inch. Made a noticeable difference in steering on the street and hopefully will eliminate the death wobble!


And the tires are still up in the air. I have a cousin who might be able to offer a decent discount, but we'll see. The Falken's do have some good reviews and should work great for my needs. It doesn't seem like anyone on Naxja really has anything to say about them though.

I've had my xj on a set of 31" falkens for about two months now, with maybe 2k miles on em.

So far they've been fairly quiet on the freeway, and the heep hasn't had too many issues driving around with em on 3.55's.
They kinda wander a little bit on the freeway, more than the old goodyear wranglers that were on it before.
I think that is caused by a few issues, mostly related to my jeep:
1) my control arm bushings are shot
2) stock short arms on 3.5" of lift
3) my steering box being on its way out
4) I don't have great contact with the outer edges of the tread pattern to the road surface. I'm sure thats caused by having the tires on my stock rims and running slightly too high air pressure. (30psi)

I like them so far, although I cannot comment on how durable they are in rocks long term... They did ok when I went and was fooling around in Holister a couple of weeks ago. did allright messing around on the rocks at the quarry. I really like that they're quiet on the freeway. If I keep my foot out of the gas they seem to get ok millage on the freeway. But I have not had the time to do a long highway road trip on them yet.

Thanks for the review. Which Falken tire do you have? It looks like there are three different A/T's out there (two look the same because one is just re-named for America's tire.) These http://www.falkentire.com/Tires/High-Country-A-T-15 look like the slightly more aggressive model.

I'm going to get MJ shackles from BlondeJon, so that should level out the rear and improve flex a bit.
 
Got a little bit of work done on the Jeep yesterday. Oil change with Mobil 1 5W-30 and a bottle of STP oil treatment (loaded with ZDDP), swapped out the fuel filter, and installed my Appalachian Armor TC skid. Very happy with the skid plate and I'm sure it'll take more abuse than I'm willing to throw at it. Here's a few cell phone pics of the skid installed.

Also saw some Falken Wild Peak A/T's on a Tacoma today. Pretty good looking tire and it's definitely moving up on my list after figuring out that I owe CA some income taxes this year. :(

I've been pretty busy with school and other stuff since the start of the year, but I definitely want to get out and play more often. Once I have the tow hooks and tires done, it should be good to go for the occasional outing.

Waiting for Hollister pics in the other thread.
 
Went down to America's Tire Co after work today and had a set of 31x10.5x15 Falken Rocky Mountain ATS tires put on. So far I like them and they look more aggressive in person than in pictures. It seems they do rub the control arms at full lock just a touch, so I'll adjust the steering stops when I get a chance. I have a set of MJ shackles to put on the rear (thanks Sean) that should pick it up a touch and level things out nicely.

Also picked up the hardware I think I needed to get my front hooks mounted. Can't wait to get those on. I also need to get a rear brake line so I don't rip this one off.

Looks good, man. Those tires would look good on my WK. I'm looking for something just like that for some overall conditions. Post up with some results after you've driven them for a few months.

The Jeep looks hot, too. Looks great with those rims.

BTW, those mj shackles... when we pulled them off the mj at pick n pull, the wrench slipped off the bolt my dad was working on, and he hit his mouth on the rear bumper. Almost knocked his teeth out. hahaha. He was ok though!

Thanks for the compliments guys. It means alot considering the quality of your own XJ's. The wheels are stock "Ravines" off I think 05-06 Wranglers.

So far the tires are great. I think they are actually quieter than the 30" BFG Long Trails that were on there before. Handling seems pretty good and stable. Have not spent much time at 65mph, but so far so good in that regard. And I think they look pretty good if I may say so myself.

Rocknxj -- I've got JKS discos on (can see the nut for them in that pic you reposted). Didn't disco (obviously) for those first pics. I really need to get it flexed and work on bumpstopping the front correctly.
 
I'd argue that you have one of the nicest rigs around. I'd keep the body stock, honestly. Too many nice xj's getting hacked up these days.

And I say all this because I have soft spot for that color scheme, my dad had one in 1995.
 
The goal is a "super-stock" type of build. 3" OME lift + 31" A/T's + a couple skids + discos + maintanence. Almost done with this phase of the build, next is restoring a few things like the headliner and interior trim along with improvements to the stereo and other comfort items. Then just enjoy the damn the thing and the places it will take me. I do not want another vehicle that I work on as much as I drive it. And I'm such a newb to offroading that this is likely already more than I will utilize.
