got a new pile of problems

so i got a new clunker this past weekend
97 xj sport
looking for some advice. it will start up and if you keep you foot on the gas it will stay running.but when it eventually dies out it wont start back up. guy i got it from says he thinks it overheated and he continued to drive home. I can already see it has WAY to much oil in it when i checked.

plans (if this motor is done) would be to take the 2 stock clunkers and turn them into 1 decent jeep. maybe.

almost sounds like a fuel delivery problem. Could be a host of fuel/sensor problems that are causing that. Is the oil free of water and vice-versa? how many miles are on it? What color are the floor mats? Do you like cheese?
