Going to be parking the Jeep for 5 months...

The image of you carrying a pizza box and 12 pack of beer on the trail looking for nick is too funny! :roflmao: :wave1:

I didn't think about that but yep thats some funny chit! I'll just tell the other hikers and the ranger that I'm making a pizza/beer delivery to mile post "whatever"!

The image of Nick eating the pizza and beer while packing heat is even funnier lol!

Have a good time Nick, and be safe. When you get back, we'll definitely have to meet up (ROAD TRIP!!!) and have some brews...I can't wait for the stories on this trip!

Can I take over the deuce recoveries while you're away? :D

I'll be following your Facebook for updates.

Very cool Nick, I don't know that I have the guts to do it solo so props to you. I think I'd at least need a camera crew...(Bear Grylls)...haha.

About bringing the heat, I wouldn't be concerned about not having your CCW...most states on the upper part of the trail probably don't recognize NC carry anyways. The best way to carry is to seem to be not carrying at all....just remember that. If you do, nobody including Rangers will know. I'd rather be caught with it, no permit, than caught without it. I'll beg for forgiveness after I keep myself alive. Go with something such as the Ruger LCP or Taurus TCP. Both very small .380s. I have the Ruger that I carry, um, that I may or may not carry daily :D.

So you're starting at Springer on the 27th huh? I may join you for a day hike if you don't mind. When are you leaving to come down this way?

I have something very close to those, a Polish P64. 9mm Makarov, shoots like a hot .380 load. It would be a pin prick to a bear, but I might need it to ward off other hikers from XJTrailrider's beer and pizza! IIRC NY and FL are the only eastern seaboard states that don't recognize NC CCP. It's going to stay home though. I have other means of self defense that I am confident in, the first being the thru-hiker stink :D

you are more than welcome to come for a day-hike. One of my buddies is driving me down and hiking to the first shelter with me, and he is planning on staying overnight. I'm really not sure when we will be arriving, it may be as late as 12-2pm. I'll let you know when travel plans are finalized, hopefully tonight.

If I'm available when you pass through here we can do that. I'll PM you my cell number.

Got it! I'll let you know 3-4 days out when I'll be passing by.

There might be weather left for a Carolina Beach trip when I get back!

I think there is a bit of a line for duece recovery assistants, but don't worry, there is seating for 16 and one up front!

Sweet! I should be out of school by then and have more of a...normal person's schedule lol. I could more than likely swing a beach trip!

Thats awesome man...I've hiked a lot of the appalachain in PA, its really nice. Hell if you're out in PA on a weekend I might be interested in coming out for a day hike also.

Hey guys, I am in Neels Gap tonight. Almost 40 miles done. One day of rain that plain sucked. My knees are swollen badly from descents down Sassafras Mtn and Blood Mtn, so I am resting for the night at the hostel here (Mountain Crossings).

Woohoo way to go nick. Keep us posted. You have the wife and I wanting to hike and camp part of AT for her birthday (Yeah that's right her birthday and it was her idea!)

watch your back, i saw that movie, bad things happened to hikers.

Good progress man, very cool !

What about the movie Wrong Turn? Scary.

Keep us updated. Are you taking any pics of your adventure?

watch out for bears.

Just caught this thread, sounds awesome man, packing heat is the only way I would go, I find it hard to believe you couldn't carry a hunting rifle on the trails, incase of large animals, and as far as the pistol, would be a must. Hope your doing well, always thought about doing this, Im still young enough but can't afford to take the time and even if I could I don't think I would stand a chance.

a hunting rifle? really?

1) you wouldnt want to carry that weight on top of everything else for over 2K miles through the mountains
2) not sure but i think most of the parks would arrest you if you had it, even if not for carrying a gun in a national park but because there are only certain hunting seasons you can hunt on the grounds and they wouldnt know if you were hunting out of season or not (just a legal thing so they could take you off the trail) ... just saying

i might pack a light weight 9mil or something similar to ward off bad people and animals but not a rifle.

Safety first honestly, I was saying the rifle more because its less likely to get you in trouble, and yes I would want to take it with me. Bears scare the shit out of me. Im not saying it would be ideal, but taking a bit of extra time due to a little added weight and such is better than getting eaten by a bear. Ask Stephen Colbert... lol

The worng rifle or the wrong shot will just piss the bear off. :roflmao:
