It only took about 6 months of being XJless and I can't help but buy one again. I have a question though. Has anyone ever bought a car in CA with no paperwork? I've found this XJ for a crazy price but there is no paperwork with it and the Plates do not match the VIN number. It's not stolen, I already had that checked out. Anyone know what I need to do to register it.

i would first see why they plates don't match. If everything checks out just apply for lost title...no big deal i had to pretty much do the same with my '90 that has a salvaged title, the previous owner never finished registration, it was a mess but they got it situated for me.

the registration could be a mess though and really expensive so be careful....

yeh im sure when he calls DMV they will inform him of back fees.

check for backfees, I am dealing with this right now, purchased a jeep off CL and kid lost the title. It had current registration so I wasnt as worried. I went to the dmv and picked up forms 227,262,and 138. These are form transferring owernship, application for duplicate title, and release of liability. Good luck.

Welcome back to the XJ world.

I had issue with my XJ when I bought it the guy gave me a title for a 92 YJ and then would not return my phone calls. Long story short I found the original title from when it was purchased in Virgina in a pile of maintenance papers in the Jeep and took it in with my to the DMV and played like a clueless guy from SLC, UT they gave me a new title and it only cost about $165 to register it with new plates.

You could be responsible for all the back fees. I purchase a few lein sale vehicles out of the tow yard and it is always a hit or miss how much I will be required to pay back fees.
